Pre-race routine:

Wasn't sure where I was going as I had stupidly left the directions at work (Or so I thought) but my inner tom tom was correct in finding the place. When I picked up my number I found out the race was 25 minutes later in starting. Urgh! No Starbucks nearby and it was FREEZING!
Event warmup:

Walked around a lot, little stretching, trying to make some friends. People here are funny however and SHUN you. Hmph. Don't know what they are missing.

Comments:

My 1st mile I ran in 9:38!!! That's a PR for me! When I got to mile 3 1/2 or so something POPPED very loudly. I think it was my back. Mile 4 1/2 my hips really, really started to hurt and I had the walk/stagger the last 2 miles or so. It was so mortifying being followed by the van that was picking up the volunteers, then crossing the finishing line LAST and they are dismantling the finish line. This is by far the worse I've felt after a race. I just sulked back to the car.
What would you do differently?:

Probably NOT sign up for races out of my league. Stick to 5K's until my running becomes stronger.
Post race
Warm down:

Mortification turned to a wee bit of anger and sadness and loneliness when I see that ALL the water has gone as have the goodies bags. I tried to cheer myself up by going for a pedicure and foot massage. Didn't really work however.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of warm up I'm sure!!!

Event comments:

I am TRYING so hard NOT too feel bad and just accept it as a learning experience but it's certainly not easy.

Hey lady....don't get down on yourself...at least you were out there doing something!! If your back hadn't gone out, you wouldn't have been last....so don't chalk that up to your abilities, it's just the way it went that one time.  Remember, I was there when you ran 8 miles and finished with a smile on your face, so I know you can do the distance.

As always, call me if you need a pick me up.....I am still debating the 12ks....30% chance of rain that day, so probably not too bad out there....which means I may do it after all....and you and I can hang afterwards and celebrate your birthday!!!  I am much wimpier than you!!!

Lynne, I think you did fabulous!  You finished and you did great!  Just promise that if you're still hurting in a couple of days, you'll visit a doc.

its one thing to sit on the couch and do nothing...............its courage to get up and do something!!  you did a great job and i echo the sentiments from above about your back!!  sulk all you want about it for that one day only, but come midnight, it is a new day and the start of new training for a different race!!!

great effort, you rock!!!

Hey, you were out there on a cold cold morning when 99% of the population was snug in their beds... you finished the race, period.

Chin UP!!!

Only advice is don't try to PR the first mile next time.    I did that in my first 10K yesterday and tired myself out too soon.

this was your first 10K? then take it and smile!! you can't help your back going out part way through--but be careful and I echo the sentiments to get it checked out!  Rest, gentle stretch and a bit of ibuprofen is probably best--a slow easy recovery swim
