I am worried about the cold water, I get cold very easily. I dont plan on doing the pre-swims but I do hope to do the DCB open water swim in Tempe lake on November 8th, anyone else? |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm planning on the 2.4 OWS on 11/8. TTL is narrow compared to the other IM courses. I think it is easier to sight though. So I suppose there are pos and cons. There are a group of AZ Bters who plan on starting together to hopefully minimize some of the rough stuff that occurs at the start. Sally is invited but she is way too fast for us slowpokes. |

I too am worried about the cold water start. I know that once you get going there is nothing to worry about but, that first 5 minutes can be pretty tense and the cold just strengthens my anxiety. I did Alcatraz a few years back and it was a great swim but, the start was scary and that was without getting whacked in the head and swam over by better swimmers. The cold just gets me more nervous. |

Me too, I expect to be in AZ by then. I'm not worred about cold water at all - 60s is nice and warm compared to swimming in the ocean in CA (less than 55 degrees on my 2mi swim 10 days ago). |

Tempe Town Lake is NOWHERE near as cold as Alcatraz, so don't worry about that! The Bay is in the low 50s most of the time! This is like bathwater by comparison ![]() |

Pro![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah, I am trying to figure out where this "cold water" is that everyone is talking about. Will it be colder than the bath tubs we are swimming now? YES, and thank God for that! Usually TTL is perfect. Should be around 70 degrees! Warmer than the air will most likely be that morning!!! We'll be fine! No more cold water talk! Pffffft! |
![]() ![]() |
![]() Again, the water will be warmer than the air temp early on a november morning, so you will not get that "jumping into cald water" shock. In fact, it wil feel.warm |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Thank you all for the soothing water talk... I am not a cold-water person either but I do swim in a local "bay" near Long Beach, CA and handled that in a sleeveless. I would like to ask if any of you have wetsuit rental info around Tempe. I will need to rent one for the race, as I would rather not try to do it in a sleeveless.. Working hard and looking forward to my 5 hr bike on Saturday and 2:30 run on Sunday... Getting close to 60 days kiddies......... Lori.. "I SAID, put your toes on the edge of that chalk LINE you slimy worms"....

I know it will be great once we get started but that first plunge will be cold. |

Member ![]() | ![]() I don't want to scare anyone that is not used to swimming in cold water, but last year at 60 deg it seemed EXTREMELY cold to me. I am from Kansas and not used to cold water swimming so i guess that it all depends on what you are used to. I wore a sleeveless wet suit last year and will absolutely wear a full one this year. I am glad I did not do a pre swim (I am not sure I would have went back in the next day if I had ![]() I hope this helps and does not scare anyone off. I did make it and had a PERFECT race after that for my 1st Ironman. Good luck to all, John |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Just out of curiosity since we aren't talking about it anymore how does the lake get and stay so cold??? It barely gets that cold outside at night nevermind during the day and with little to no current I would think the lake should stay a bit warmer. I did Alcatraz a few years back and it was cold when you first jumped in but wasn't bad once the swim was underway. I would also say at least 50-100 people did the Alcatraz swim with NO wetsuit and they seemed just fine afterward. Some people are crazy!! Anyway, had to take a few days off as I was getting sick from too much work and too much training. I could not get my energy to stay up and was getting more sick everyday so bit the bullet and took some days off but now I feel better. Congrats on the wedding that will be great to celebrate your honeymoon once you are an IRONMAN!!! Won't be long now... |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Alright, we're back from the "mini-moon"...and back to reality. I feel really far behind after having a few weeks of low volume. But you only (hopefully) get married once, so no regrets there. I hope everyone is having a great week! What's on tap for the coming weekend? I'll be doing a 2hr run one day and a 5hr ride the other day. The specific days depend on the weather (it's supposed to rain on Saturday, so I'll probably run that day). |

![]() ![]() |
![]() Great training day for me! A good 4.5-hr bike with a 15-min brick run. I'm not a speedy cyclist but I kept a good pace, didn't drift mentally, and freaking NAILED my nutrition. The brick run felt good, too. I'm happy - built some good confidence today! I rarely make "yay me" posts, but today I just had to. Thanks for indulging me! |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() well done to dave699! nutrition is the real battle for alot of us. Jezzie, I swim about 20-21 mins. per 1000 yards if that helps any. I am ok with being steady and conserving. I just learned to swim last year so I just need to get the thing done and get back on my feet. |
![]() ![]() |
Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dave If you can't brag about yourself here then where can you??? Great Job!!! I think I swim at about 1:50-1:55 per 100 meters when doing events. The wetsuit makes a big difference and also my training times are much slower than the actual events due to stopping/starting, rest, sets, etc. I haven't really been focusing on swimming too much. I can improve the most on the bike/run so I have been trying to do that. I have the Portland Marathon coming up Oct. 4 so I've also been getting ready for that...not sure I'd do that again, schedule a marathon, but live and learn. |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Dave, way to go! That's awesome & IMO you ARE a speedy cyclist! Jezzie, my swim pace is expected to be right around 2min/100m pace. Maybe a little slower due to congestion and what not. I have a love/hate relationship with my swimming right now...one day I'm cruising at a 1:50 pace with minimal effort and then the next week I'm struggling to maintain a 2:10 pace. Who knows what race day will bring for me... Greg, I might be out there cheering you on! I did the Portland Marathon last year and loved it! I might be there rooting for some friends, so if you let me know what you're wearing and predicted pace, I'll keep an eye out for ya. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I've got the Las Vegas HIM next weekend as a test to see where I am at. Well, I plan on just trying to maintain a steady pace, practice nutrition, and try not to go above 160HR and run the entire race. Those are my goals. Sub 6 would be nice too. My last HIM at oceanside was 6:44 so I would like to show improvement. I also think I blew up on the run last time b/c of the bike. So like I said...a test. Hope I pass. Anyone else planning on being at LV? |
