Pre-race routine:

Sushi for dinner, pre-race favorite!
Event warmup:

Downed a Cliff shot for race energy then went into the pool area. Chatted and warmed up arms while waiting for a lane in the pool to open up.
Swim
  • 00m
  • 440 yards
  • / 100 yards
Comments:

Being a pool swim it was pretty easy and felt short compared to my usual 1500m training days.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to start the timer on my watch at the start of my swim and not halfway through the second lap!
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Even though I wasn't wearing a wet suit it still felt like T1 took too long. The run from the pool to the transition area was very short so my feet were still very wet when I was putting my socks on.
What would you do differently?:

Position my towel a little more effectively.
Bike

Comments:

The course was fun and quick. One problem I had was my biking glove kept pressing the start/stop button on my watch whenever I moved my wrist. This completely messed up the tracking of my split as there was no official split timing.
What would you do differently?:

Find a better way to track my timing as my watch was not working very well.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Smooth T2, overall. No snags and timing felt OK.
Run
  • 00m
  • 3 miles
  •  min/mile
Comments:

Having just biked the course I knew what to expect on the run. Took about half a mile for my legs to shift from biking to running mode, doing a brick each week has helped me gauge that transition. Once in run mode I cruised along and felt good, albeit at a fairly slow and comfortable pace.

On the final 200 yards a college age girl passed me and encouraged me to "kick it in gear for the finish!" Having some energy left in my legs I did just that and kept pace with her to finish the run strong and fast.
What would you do differently?:

Push myself a little harder once my legs get into run mode, I know I can run faster.
Post race
Warm down:

Enjoyed some local strawberries and stretched my legs out.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Be willing to push my run a bit faster.

Event comments:

Could have used a few more volunteers and/or better organized. While there were just enough on course at each turn to keep us on course the transition area could have used a bit more supervision. There were a couple bikers who didn't dismount and rode their bike into the transition area.

For a small town race it was fun and low key. I plan to keep it on my calendar as a fun mid-season sprint.

I have always been an athlete, growing up playing team sports like basketball and soccer. I also ran in a couple of 10K races every year, so I had no reason to worry about running a 5K...right?

After I left the running store, I couldn't stop thinking about the sprint tri and how much of a challenge it would be for me. So instead of joining a gym, I started riding my bike and it felt great.

I couldn’t help but feel that the race had beaten me. Perhaps duathlons were more for me? No, I was more determined than ever to succeed. I was determined to get on top of my swimming.

This life of mine is not so different from yours. It has a multitude of similarities. I suffer from uncertainty, I get nervous at the thought of registering and when getting to the starting line.

I am not going to buy a tri-suit before my first tri - I want to make sure I am going to stick with this before I spend a lot of money on it so I want to figure out what will work best.

I couldn't believe that my splits kept getting lower! I started to run harder after I passed the "5 km" sign and picked a few people that I wanted to pass.
