As far as family friendly events there are always the group rides- just check active.com . There are a handful of stage races and Time trials in the area too.

Are you looking for something competetive that the family can be involved in, or just spectate?

I would be curious to see what else is out there too.

Here are some websites I use to look for century rides, but they also list other types of cycling events.

http://www.sadlebred.com/

http://www.bikesbl.org/

There is also a fairly thorough list of century rides within a 2-ish hour drive from Atlanta on the North Atlanta Multisport website if you are a member and can access the forum.

im looking for something competitive akin to the local 5k circuit even if i hae to drive to metro atlanta. i wonder if it exists. its kind of hard getting info off some of these sites because you have to be a member, which is difficult to assess when you are a newbie....

any cut and pasters are welcome to let us know...

There are but I am not certain it is as publicly open as running races are. Not sure what the requirements are--if it is as simple as signing up to join a cycling league (like how you join the USAT)  or if you have to be on a team or if qualifications are required to participate.

My brother in law is on a team and does races all the time. He isn't pro and he does mostly crits but like today for example he did the 60 mile race that was part of the US Classic  over in Marietta. And  a month ago he did a 60 mile race out in Cherokee. And I know he raced somewhere Friday night, crit I think. Anyway,  like I said though, he is on a team.

However, I have another friend who does crits. You might try that. I think if you haven't raced before you have to start in cat 5. I have a friend who is not on a team but still races the crits. He has moved up to cat 4 and he also races in the master's category.

I'll ask around and see what I find out. But in the meantime, you should ask your local bike shop.

Wait, thinking out loud here, what is the cycling organization--Sorba? Is that just mountain biking?? They have a website. Maybe some links.  . .

Not entirely sure what you're looking for, if not crits..I'm not aware that Road Races would have a junior's division so that only leaves time trials and crits.

Link to Georgia Cup below..Pretty well esteemed in Southern biking circles.

www.georgiacup.com

You can also always try Active..Good luck and sing out if you find anything.

thanks for all of your suggestions. online, this kind of looks more up my alley:

Im not sure it will be suitable for the family but i guess they will make do with 5ks and group rides.

Anyone here ever done WBL rides? I had the impression they were quite brisk, pace-wise, but that link made it sound not so hysterical..

Check out the cyclocross races which start in October. www.georgia-cross.com.

You have to get a specific bike though, or you can use a mtb.

now im a bit spoiled for choice. does anyone know how to join wbl? from what i can gather it might just be a show up, sign in, and you're on:

"The Winter Bike League is a series of winter training rides that take place in Athens, Georgia during December, January and February. These Events take place every Saturday and start at Sunshine Cycles at 10 a.m. ewt (eastern window time). All rides in December will be four (4) hours (or less in cases of inclement weather)."
