Dang. My daughter wants to come home from NC State today, early for Easter break. No ride this soon so she takes the Amtrak from Raleigh to Charlotte, with a couple of leary parents awaiting her. Everything's fine until she texts saying the train has stopped... there has been an accident. Actually a fatality, with someone hit on the tracks.

Thoughts and prayers go out to victim and family.

Meanwhile she sits and who knows WHEN the train will get started again. Gonna be a long night. Thankful she's ok but hope she's not too traumatized.

I've been on one not quite so bad - we clipped a truck that ran the gates.  No fatalities but still sad. It took about an hour extra of waiting on a trip that's normally just over two hours ... we got discounts for our next trip and some chips.  Thankfully, no one was waiting for me on the other end.

Did they get them off the train and on to coach buses? That happens sometimes.

I still love taking the tain.

First off, I really appreciate the concern....... that's just nice. Thank you.

Well, she actually got home last night about 11 pm. Glad, but it kinda feels a little insensitive too, if you know what I mean.... the train continued to Charlotte.

She came off the train and I just hugged her and said I'm so sorry. (That that happened). She was ok but said later that she didn't think she wanted to ride the train again. We'll talk tonight about it.

I agree with you..... I think trains are really neat still. Will be riding somewhere soon.

What's sad is that in this part of the country this is fairly common.

Life goes on, but with pauses, sadness, and challenges.

Wow; hard to believe you can be THAT unaware of your surroundings with headphones. I admit I rarely use headphones, but cat imagine not hearing a train barreling down on you.

Sorry for the victim, their family and the emotional trauma the crew and passengers had to go through.

We live a few 100 yards from the tracks and suicides happen in our area fairly regularly; I'd say once a year.

That's what I'm thinking too, that unaware ? .... something else involved ? Maybe not though.

There is a big difference in noise and vibration between a commuter train like Amtrak and a freight train.  The Amtraks are very quiet in comparison and can sneak up on you.  I live on a bluff above railroad and also run often on a multiuse path that crosses a set of tracks.

A few years ago, I was the last person to see a girl alive on that path as she passed by me on a bike while talking on a cellphone.  She never knew what hit her.  People cross the tracks there many times without encountering a train and become a little complacent.  Add that to the mental distraction of music or cellphone or texting and stuff happens.  Very tragic.

Good point.

Also, train moving @ 79 mph when accident happened. Dang.... in town ? Talked to Lyn and she said it never felt like they went over 50. Of course, first time rider, young driver so not too much awareness of speed.

i routinely cross train tracks while riding my bike and even WITH the barriers and bells, i am still SUPER SUPER cautious about looking both ways over and over again and getting across as quick as possible.  in my car i NEVER EVER sit on the tracks (like waiting for a red light to change) JUST IN CASE.  this just blows my mind!
