They seem to be springing up around. I can't say I get the appeal but maybe that is because where I live there is some kind of race going on just about every weekend.

Somehow running 6.2 miles on a random Saturday morning and running a 10k road race just don't seem like the same thing to me.

Very doubtful.  My schedule is already near overload with three or four races a month.  I love to race but there are so many options around here that it sometimes gets tough to pick.

More importantly, the thing I like most about racing is the atmosphere and people at the events.  It is almost addicting to me to toe the line with other racers.  It is a great time to see old friends and make new ones.

this.

the point is the cause/fundraiser, not the race itself.

i have registered for virtual races and not run them, though.  whoops.

Maybe sorta?

A couple years ago, I did a "Do U" (do your own ultra). Some of my ultra-running friends decided to put together a virtual ultra, we had a month or so to do our ultra and then we got together at the end of the window for a "post race celebration" at a local bar. We had to submit stories about our ultra, where we ran, why we chose the course, what we saw or did. We were supposed to bring souveniers from the day. One of my friends created the plan which for us was a "tour de parks" and we ran 8 miles at one park, 9 at another, 10 at a third, and about 5 at the 4th park. Other friends who weren't intrested in that much running joined us at one or more of the parks throughout the day.

I've done a couple of strava races where you are given a route and a deadline.

I did one for the victims of Christcrist, New Zealand after their big earthquake.  It happened the week after I left and it really hit me and so it was my way of giving back

I can't wrap my brain around this.

To the OP: I have never done one but I think one that would include a shirt (vs. just a printable bib) would be cool. Especially if it was something done via social media where you had different states and countries participating....the shirt could list out the states/counties represented on the back.
