I live in a very large neighbor hood , but it has very very few lights.  Currently I am on the trainer at 5:30, but would rather be out on the roads.  What is decent lighting set up that can be easly removed from the bike?

NiteRider makes some great products.  I like this one ...

I don't reccomend riding in the dark but if you are gonna do it, get this light:

I was driving home from work one night and about 2 miles up the road I saw a blinking light.  I kept trying to figure out what it was.  When I finally got close enough I realized it was a bike!  I was so impressed I stopped and asked the guy what kind of light he had.  He siad "Dinotte".  They are pretty pricey but the are very effective IMO.

There is a choice between needing a light to see or to be seen. I have same issue while riding but mine is in late evenings. I ride on streets with lights, but come across patches where they are out and can't see a thing in front of me. I have gotten away with a very lite LED model from Catseye that does the trick, but would not be good enough if I was counting on it 100% to see path ahead of me.

It is pretty bright for small, compact light that clips to aero bar. Then I have light on the back that clips on and is pretty darn bright red LED. Can change from fixed light to flashing. If you need light that has greater output, the MTB mags and sites are good searching point I have found.

Good Luck.

Believe me I do not want to ride in the dark.  I leave for work at 6am and do not get home until 7:15pm.  I have a 19month old that is my world.  My wife and I run in the evenings so this leaves early morning if I want any mileage.  I could do the trainer in the garage until it is light enough to see.  I just need some miles.........

I use the regular MiNewtx2 (not the dual) and have plenty of light for mountain biking so I'm sure it would be more then enough for road riding. It's a impressive light.

I picked mine up from a internet site called Full Cycles and they beat everyone else's price when I purchased it back in the spring time.

I can only comment from experience on the tail light: I'll put the Planet bike Superflash tail light up against anything for the money, and most lights costing way more. It's insanely bright and for $ 18-25 it's a great value. Ride safely.

I am in the same situation as the OP...Large neighborhood, low light, running out of daylight time to train. I have realized that most of these ID-10-T people can't see me at noon while wearing day-glow colors...I am actually scared that using lights would only atract driver like moth to a flame!

Good information.  I am going to start riding longer so of course need to prepare for earlier starts.  I have a reflective vest, but I need o see too!

I've raced Mtn Bikes in the dark. I prefer the HID systems by Niterider (I think mines the Flamethrower). Lasts forever, recharges fast. I also have a bar mounted Classic (Halogen) as a back up. I also have a Dinotte LED system, just nothing is nearly as bright as a HID. I much prefer a helmet mounted light over a bar mounted light too!

For off-road, that helmet mounted light is pretty much necessary.

On the road, I think it's just plain a good idea. In fact, I like to have both a bar-mounted light AND a helmet mounted light. The helmet-mounted works great for "flashing the bights" at cars, as well as a work light should you flat.
