The first 2 tri I have done I wore my mountain bike shoes (put them on/off in transition).

I never have had a road bike shoes and wonder what the performance difference may be.

The Mountain bike shoes make running through the transition area pretty easy.

On-bike performance will be pretty much the same.  Road bike shoes generally have a stiffer sole than mtb but you probably won't notice any big gains there.  If you get tri shoes and are able to slip them on/off while riding the bike, then you'll get some decent time advantage by not sitting still in T1/T2 putting them on/taking them off.

Mountain bike shoes? They're going to LAUGH AT YOU! They're going to LAUGH AT YOU!

Seriously, there's nothing wrong with that. You won't be giving up anything other than they typically are a little heavier. OTOH they are designed to wear off the bike so walking/running is a lot easier

Probably none for sprint or shorter and very little in an OLY. You would get better gains by doubling your training mileage on the bike. I say that without looking at your logs but I'd bet that's the case.

I love my mtb shoes. I can train in them all year and not have to crab walk into a coffee shop or whatever. Come race day, I've had no problems getting the shoes off on the bike and doing flying dismounts (they're usually velcro just like road shoes). Well, slow rolling dismounts but that's my fault, not the shoes...

I use MTB shoes as well but mine have a ratcheting system in addition to the velcro.  Need to figure out if I can do the on/off without wrecking...

I used my mtn bike shoes for a tri last year...b/c I rode my mtn bike.  My road bike uses a different pedal than my mtn bike, so I have road shoes.  I agree that getting in and out of transition is easier with mtn bike shoes than road shoes.

I only own mtb shoes. I've done 5 sprint tris. I love being able to easily run through the transition area. Since I'm not at a point where I want to try the flying mount I don't feel I'm giving up a thing by not using road shoes.

Specialized two-strap velcro mountain bike shoes for me....

I wish they were a little lighter... I also wonder why someone has not figured out that because of it's flexibility (spin class, running thru transition, Xterra, etc... all of which I do) there might be a market for a lightweigt Mountain SPD shoe with some tri friendly features....

A Mtn bike shoe will have a softer sole and will not transfer energy as well as a harder carbon sole of a true road shoe. The mtn shoe sole will tend to flex and give on the push and pull of the full pedal stroke.

If you can afford the road shoe, get them. You will get a more effeciant pedal stroke with the shoes. If it is a cost issue just use your mtn shoes for now.
