Teen Sentenced To Not Say ‘Bingo’ For 6 Months

First off, I find the story amusing, but it did make me think because we often hear the argument that it's ok to restrict our 1st Amendment rights in a way such as not yelling fire in a theater due to safety reasons.  However this story seems to stretch those restrictions outside the bounds of "public safety".

There obviously isn't a safety issue (IMHO) with someone yelling Bingo in a Bingo hall, it's more of a nuisance and it's probably appropriate to cite these kids for disorderly conduct.  However, from a free speech standpoint we typically allow nuisance things to be said.  Think Westboro baptist church, they're the epitome of nuisance, but they do have the right to say the garbage they say.

I know it was just the cop making the statement about not being able to yell Bingo in a bingo hall, and I haven't read the court opinion so maybe the actual case had nothing to do with the 1A. I'm just curious to what my CoJ buddies think of yelling Bingo in a Bingo hall (when you don't have a Bingo).

It's a matter of the fact that the 1st amendment does protect false speech Vs incitement to a riot. Have you ever been in a bingo parlor when a whole bunch of blue hairs have their bingo playing interrupted?

Blue hairs don't use markers, they use the electronic machines loaded with about 400 games.

I've only played bingo once and there were tons of older people and everyone had to use markers. I guess I'm not up on the latest bingo trends.

It's wrong to do, but it sure is amusing.  It would make great material for a practical joke show.

lol, i didn't think about it from that perspective.  I think I may have to reverse my statement that this isn't a safety issue.

They should have let the ladies kick their butts.

1:  I'm surprised the bingo hall didn't have rules posted...perhaps they did?  I'm a bit of a fuddy-duddy, I respect the attempt at humor, but there comes a point where their actions become worthy of having police step in.  If the teens were on the grounds of the bingo hall, seems like an open and shut case...then again, I'm not a lawyer...but I have watched Liar Liar twice.

2:  My opinion carries a lot of weight as I am one of the most successful bingo players in the history of the game.  Back in college home on break, I was set to watch a pay-pre-view boxing bout one night...unfortunately, my dad was sick and cancelled.  My mom was going out with her friends to the church for bingo.  I figured oh well.  I bought a $5 card and entered.  The "blue hairs" really do run those places.  There was a 5-card limit for each player, and most of them come with their own blotters.  LOTS of folks out for bingo.  Anywhoo, with my one card I wasn't anticipating anything, but fortunately I did snag "Crazy L's" with no other bingos called out.  $125 all for me!  Not bad for a $5 investment.  I figured it was well-earned as that very church stole many hours from me as a kid...hours in CCD when I could have been playing sports or watching tv!

I ride at an indoor velodrome and there are volleyball courts in the center. We were doing a 'take-a-lap' workout in which we ride as a big group on the blue line, the front person drops down to the black line and sprints around the track to the end of the group. Then they pull back up to the blue line and yell, "on," and the next person on the front does the same thing. The volleyball players thought it would be fun to yell, "on," at random times. Until we learned that it was fun to yell, "leave it," at random times.
