Subject: Bingo!!!Teen Sentenced To Not Say ‘Bingo’ For 6 Months First off, I find the story amusing, but it did make me think because we often hear the argument that it's ok to restrict our 1st Amendment rights in a way such as not yelling fire in a theater due to safety reasons. However this story seems to stretch those restrictions outside the bounds of "public safety". There obviously isn't a safety issue (IMHO) with someone yelling Bingo in a Bingo hall, it's more of a nuisance and it's probably appropriate to cite these kids for disorderly conduct. However, from a free speech standpoint we typically allow nuisance things to be said. Think Westboro baptist church, they're the epitome of nuisance, but they do have the right to say the garbage they say. I know it was just the cop making the statement about not being able to yell Bingo in a bingo hall, and I haven't read the court opinion so maybe the actual case had nothing to do with the 1A. I'm just curious to what my CoJ buddies think of yelling Bingo in a Bingo hall (when you don't have a Bingo). |
