Subject: Has anyone successfully merged a HIM and Marathon Training Plan?

After my "A Race" Eagleman, I would like to start training for a BQ attempt at a Fall Marathon.  At the same time, I would like to maintain my bike and swimming fitness to the point where I can compete in another HIM and Olympic race.

Ideally, I would like to combine a Pfitzinger marathon 18/55 plan with a basic 10 hour peak HIM planHas ANYONE done this successfully?  I did a search and found nothing.  I've also read a few posts on other sites (running sites mostly) over the last few years where people were looking for the same info, but no one was ever able to produce such a plan or share the details of a self-created plan that successfully maps out how to do this.

Anyone done this or no of such a plan?

I did a HIM plan that finished at the end of September and then just shifted to a marathon plan and fit the swim and bike into it for maintanance at around (bike 250-300 miles per month and swim around 15000 yards per month) and did the marathon 3 months later ish.  Others have pushed it much closer and integrated better, but it was my first HIM and my first full mary.  I am sure you will hear more as others post.

I have basically taken my planned training for the year from several sources and created my own training plan.  I have a half in July, a sprint in August, an Oly in September and a Marathon in January.  For the marathon I am planning on using the Pfitzinger 18/55 plan as well.  I used the import/export feature to get the blank template, spent a couple of hours entering the data and then imported into my training log.  You can find the instructions for doing it here

I trained for both a HIM and marathon last year. I did the Longhorn IM 70.3 and then three weeks later I did the Marine Corps Marathon. Longhorn was my "A" race while the MCM was my fun race. I ended up with a PR (3:37) at MCM. I realized that I could PR at around the 18th mile mark when I didn't feel as tired as normally do.

The only thing that I did that was different from my normal standalone HIM training was that my long run weekends were at a marathon level distance versus a HIM level. For example, I don't run anything over 12 miles while training for a standalone HIM whereas my marathon level runs had me going 22 miles as my longest run. I also probably ran 1-2 days less per week than when I just trained for a marathon only. The bike and swim were done at the same distance and level of intensity as a HIM only plan.  I was still biking and swiming even after the HIM was over.

My training plans are self-made.  It has no name Laughing

Since you looking at trying to BQ and substantially lift your running mileage, I would follow the run plan and just do a ride or swim whenever you feel you can.  Keep up tri training (maybe with more run focus to help you transition into the marathon plan) after E-man until you get through RI in July.  After you recover from that, then you enter marathon training and any tris are just for fun.

I started a thread in the Georgia forum yesterday, asking this exact question.

here's the link, if you want to read it and the responses of some that have done it:

GA thread

Some responders stated that as long as you are running enough leading up to the HIM, merging the HIM plan into a marathon plan is doable.

I'm going to do it...

I did a HIM in late October 2008 and went right into marathon training for a February 2009 marathon.
I will do another HIM on June 14, 2009, so my HIM plan technically began in January 2009 while I was in heavy marathon training territory. The plans overlapped by about a month.

My primary and most pressing goal was the February marathon so I stuck to that plan the best I could. Due to a foot injury, I was forced to skip a few runs a week, and I repaced them with time on the bike. My plan had one day of cross training per week built in, and I chose to do a long swim that day each week.

All great stuff.  After reading everying from this thread, and the Georgia thread, I think I'm just going to try an maintain my 20+mpw (like I am now) and get it up to 25 mpw between E-man and R.I.  and then after I am fully recovered from R.I. I am just going to do a "Run Focus" and follow a Pfitz plan using biking and swimming as Recovery.  I'm thinking maybe I can get all of my running done in the morning, and with ever is left over swim at lunch and bike in the evenings.  Oh man, this is going to be fun.

Last year I developed ITBS because after my HIM in October (averaging 20mpw) I went right to 30+ mpw trying to get ready for Philly.  This year I plan to increase my volume a lot slower -  10 to 15% per week.

tuan2u,
I'm toying with the idea of doing California 70.3 in late March 2010 and then 3 weeks later running Boston. I see your timeline was the same. What was your recovery/trainng like between the 2 races? I've done two HIM's. After #1 I was pretty sore, #2 wasn't too bad. I just don't want to be put myself in a bind and then not be able to run Boston. What do you think? Any one else with suggestions?
Thanks.

What kind of gap are we talking from HIM to mary start?

Has anybody done the opposite.  I am already thinking of next year and would like to do an early June marathon and a late August HIM.
