Subject: Dizzy when I get out of the ocean
The three times that I have practiced OWS I have been very dizzy when I get out of the water.  I can't imagine attempting to run up a ramp right away and putting on bike gear.  Someone mentioned wearing earplugs might help.  What kind and where can I get them? Thanks!

Not exactly the same thing, but I got dizzy from doing flip turns when I first learned to do them.  Someone suggested ear plugs (which you should be able to get from a decent sports shop); I tried them, but they had no effect and I found them a pain to deal with.  What did finally help was just continuing to do flip turns.  I guess I got used to it (the flipping, not the dizziness -- I'm no longer dizzy).

Yes, I get that too in open water, especially when it is cold. I never have had a problem in the pool. My first tri I luckily had a volunteer catch me as I was veering off the ramp exiting the water.

there are two basic styles: the plug type and the molding type. i prefer the mold type (such as Macks)  for comfort but have used both and they both work.

the earplugs have solved my problem completely

I use the Mack's aqua blocks in the link above.  Started using them after getting vertigo in an race.   Not sure that I need them, but they give me mental comfort in OWS (don't use them in the pool).  Benefit is you don't get that "water leaking from your ear" 4 hours after swimming

Earplugs worked for me too.

Never had a problem with dizzyness again after I started using them....

I used to get vertigo after OWS, and I finally figured it out. Try switching sides that you breath on every 5 minutes or so. I found that if I swim for 30 minutes, breathing only on the right I'll get really queasy. Swapping back and forth regularly totally fixed it.

Good luck!

I need earplugs for even a pool swim or I get dizzy.  A lake is pretty much like the pool for me, but in the ocean, even with earplugs, I get some dizzyness or motion sickness (i think cause of the up and down of the swells).  I'm also the first one to barf when we're on a boat, and can't ride in the back seat of a car without getting sick...

I use the silicon 'blob' type earplugs that you just stuff in and that works well for me.  My wife hates those, and uses the christmass tree looking plugs that you just stick in.  They work for her.  Everyone is different, but a few different kinds (they are only a couple of bucks) and try them out.  You can get them online from amazon or any of the Tri shops, or locally at a sporting goods store.  I just went to the local Sportsmart and bought 3 different kinds and tried them all.

<---- another big proponent for earplugs. I've tried 'em all, and the only ones that really work for me are the christmas tree type. If I swim in a pool without them, I get water sloshing around in my ears for hours afterward. If I swim in the ocean without them, I also get dizzy.

Like a previous poster said, they're only a few bucks a pair, so buy a few different types and see what works.

By the way, the run from the ocean to T1 at Camp Pendleton isn't up the boat ramp- it's up the beach sand, which is way worse . The ramp comes right after you leave the transition area.

A good friend always pukes from seasickness after each OWS... just gotten used to the fact that he'll feel like sh*t getting out of the water. So I guess this is fairly normal and just something to learn to deal with.

Not completely sure but it could be something related to your blood pressure depending on the distance you are swimming. Obviously when you swim you lay down-have you ever been sitting or lying down and stood up too quick and become dizzy? It's because you have what's called a vasovagal episode which in basic terms is a drop of BP and/or HR. I guess it's possible that when you stand from your OWS you're suffering vasovagal episodes due to your lying position for a period of time that quickly becomes a standing position. If you think about it if you lay a drink bottle down and imagine the liquid inside is blood, as soon as you stand that drink bottle up all the liquid drains from top of the bottle to the bottom-essentially in your body this is the blood draining from your brain due to your quick position change and it takes time for your body to re-regulate your blood flow.

And sorry I really have no idea what you could do to stop it. But then again it may not be what i've just described-it may be something completely different! Hope that wasn't too confusing :-)
