Has anyone else here trained their dogs and cats to catch a fly?  I really haven't done anything special other than utter a quick, "GET THE FLY!"  ...but wouldn't ya know it, a simple command leads the dog and/or cat on a chase to catch the occasional fly that makes it inside the house.  The dog smashes her nose against the window, and the cat pretty much catches it in her mouth...we reward them with a treat immediately after.

I was just wondering if this is a common dog/cat talent.  Any other insect huntin' pets out there???

The cats and dogs we had needed no encouragement.  They were always immediately "on it" when a bug got in the house.

My fat lab will snap flies if they come near her or her food but she really saves her energy for napping.

Our cat goes after flies and moths all the time. it's fun to watch her on the hunt and going for the kill. She likes to strut after making her kill too!

I have a hunter as well.  He has knocked everything off an end table to get at a fly or whatever in the window.  Chatters at them too.

It's all fun and games until they start catching bees.  My dog has gotten 3 so far.  After she gets stung it looks like she has golf balls under her skin over her entire body.  She also vomits and has diarrhea for 2 days, it is not fun.  No more fly catching allowed in our house.

Years ago, my cats used to catch flies and other bugs in our bedroom even when we had the lights off. It was pretty amazing. We have two kittens now and they’re still honing their skills. My previous cat would stalk, wait, make one pounce and it was over. Now, with the kittens, it’s a lot of running around at top speed, acrobatic jumping, leaping onto furniture, crashing into things, and eventually battering the bug into submission.

I have to kill it myself. Otherwise my cats will run over and destroy anything in their path during the hunt.

My dachshund catches flies with no training - little hunter for sure.
He did injure a bee once but I got him to step away before he tried to gobble it up.

One of my dogs will chase and kill flies

One of my dogs will go hide in another room if she sees a fly

One of my dogs is completely indifferent and thinks the other two are fools for worrying about a stupid fly

This is our dogs.  They do it outside too.  We have a shepherd/lab mix that will try to climb trees to catch birds, etc.  The only time she actually got a bird, it was already dead, and brought it into the house, and proceeded to rip it apart in our bed.  It was like the Godfather in there.  Beaks, legs, everywhere.

Our Lab/Chow ended up getting a cricket, which my kids think are just miniature "godzilla's" in training.
