I've used Zoots a few times, which have worked ok.

Depends on the terrain, and what works for your feet. I like a little support for the longer distances.

What are you running in now ?

You might be able to just put in quick laces and those can be your race shoes.

However, I like fresh shoes for long races, and usually will grab another pair if my training shoes are getting worn.

It depends on the race.  Usually you are best to just wear what you train in.  If you are a more advanced runner you might have a pair of performance trainers or even a racing flat.  If it is a warm weather race I prefer to wear something with more drainage than I train in (Pearl Izumi iso transitions).  I train on a lot of gravel paths so use a closed sole otherwise I pick up rocks in the drainage holes.  My go to shoe had been Asics DS Trainers but I've switched to Mizuno Wave Precisions.

Big fan of the Asics DS trainer for training and DS Racer for races (all the way up to marathon). Shoes are a big comfort thing though, you have to find what works for you.

I use Zoot Ultra Speed for everything up to the half marathon (or HIM).  For that distance and longer I like a bit more cushioning and will use one of my ASISCs shoes depending on the race course conditions.

For longer running events I will often race in my favorite pair of training shoes.  If I go to a light weight racing shoe in these longer events I often get hot spots on my feet which can lead to blisters before the race is over in a long event.  It kinds of comes down to what my goal for the race is though. If it is an "A race" and I am trying to PR or win my Age Group, then I go with the light weight racing flats (I have a 10 year old pair of Asic Gel Hyper speed with about 250 miles of racing on them) .  They make me feel faster and my times usually reflects that psychological advantage (but the same can be accomplished with a Lucky florescent pair of shoe laces or a lucky pair of race socks).  If it is a "B race" or if I feel it is more important to protect me feet or to be comfortable that to PR then I go with the training shoes. I have lot of training shoes but the Asics GT2000 is some thing I might pick for this.  The brand or model isn't important.  What is important is that they fit well and are comfortable.  Run in the shoes in the store, or outside the store if they will let you, before you buy them.  The last time I set a PR I was in a "B pair" of training shoes with over 600 miles on them. I left town with them on my feet but didn't have any other running shoes so that is what I raced in.

Note: I saw a interview of Ryan Hall several years ago and they asked him what the biggest mistake amateur runners make.  He said not having the right shoes for different types of training and race.  If I were sponsored by Asics I might say that too but since no one is sponsoring me but my wife and my mother I will say that a sturdy training shoe is the best way to go if you are going to be on your feet for more that 100 minutes.  If you a going under 100 minutes then treat yourself to a light weight trainer to intimidate the competition and get your self mentally into race mode.  You can race well in either though so there is no right or wrong selection.  Choose what fits with your goals for the day.
