Subject: Good Audiobooks for running

So the music is getting boring but in the past I have found a few audiobooks that have been great for running.  I'll admit that my taste is probably drastically different than some but I'm an economics nerd and I'm former Navy EOD so either topic can keep my mind busy enough to get through treadmill sessions and long running workouts.

One of my favorite action audiobooks was Lone Survivor by Marcus Luttrell.  It was pretty gritty and stayed on point instead of flowing out into 5 minutes of describing a flower with eye rolling imagery.

Is anyone else using audiobooks and do you have any good ones to suggest?

Not sure if they are good to you, but I like them.

I have the entire Ricky Gervias show (all 5-6 seasons and "guide to) podcasts.

I have a couple Stephen King books and a couple Tom Clancy books.  I already read them, so it's nice to hear them again.

I tend to go for bang for my buck.  The Stand from Stephen King is like 60 hours for 20-30 bucks.  It lasts most of a season.

I listen to audio books and prefer them to music.  I don't have a specific preference so I can't help there except to say I liked the Malcolm Gladwell books.  I get my books from the library.  If you download and listen to them from Overdrive you get the normal 2 weeks.  However if you download from overdrive to your mp3 you keep it as long as you want and can still "return" the book.

I just finished "The Passage" and "The Twelve" by Justin Cronin.  They were a good 36+ hours each and I thought they were very good.

If you like military books Tom Clancy will give you some hours to listen too, but his earlier stuff is good, the later stuff is downright bad.

I've gotten some from Overdrive as well (though our system gives 21 days) - very enjoyable over but the ones i've 'read' probably aren't the OP's cup of tea - they had the Hunger Games and i listened a funny female blogger's book but that's about it.

It is easier for me to pace myself with a book than with music.

The last book I listened to was Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand - a WWII story - excellent book.

I also enjoy non fiction audiobooks as long as it is a subject I ma interested in and an interesting book of course.

maybe I need to re-join Audible

I sometimes listen to podcasts also while running

We just finished listening to the first two books in a series about superheroes in the post-zombocalypse world - Ex-Heros and Ex-Patriots. The latter involves the superheroes, zombies, and a group of "supersoldiers" who were genetically modified under a secret DOD program shortly before the zombocalypse. It sounds like a hot mess of elements, but they work quite well. Mrs gearboy is not generally a fan of any of those genres, but enjoyed the storytelling here.

Unbroken was fantastic.

I also listened to Born To Run and really enjoyed it.

Audiobooks have been a staple of my running for 6 years now.  I tend to alternate between normal books, sci-fi and podcasts.

Normal books:

- Into Thin Air (my first runnig audo book. I was only able to run 5km at most back then. I started listening and enjoyed it so much I ended up running 10km  before I realized it...)

- Confessions of An Economic Hitman (Economics, military, humour...)

- most Simon Winchester books (Kraratoa, Map that Changed the world, Crack at the Edge) - great combination of history, biography

- Song of Ice and Fire (George RR Martin) - Yup. That's the Game of Thrones series. Thousands of pages, hundreds of hours. I've run huge chunks of 2011 & 12 listening to these. When will George get his butt in gear and finish the next book?????

- I am America and So Can You (Stephen Colbert) - just plain fun

Sci-Fi:

- Foundation series,  Dune Series, **Some** Heinlein,

Podcasts:  I find there are only 2 worth listeing to:   CBC Radio's "Quirks and Quarks" & NPR's "Radio Lab" - both have a strong science bend to them so its more for us nerd types....

You aren't the only one asking.

I think the problem is that he is busy doing children's stories...
