Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Who doesn't own a car and how do you manage? I'm guessing most that don't (Like Tony and Monica) live in pretty dense urban areas with tons of public transit options. I'm curious about you people but I'm also curious about those that maybe live in a little less urban or an urban environment without tons of public transit.
I'm toying with the idea of giving it a go. As it is I bike commute to the office 4-5 days a week. I live in the middle of town (Old Town Scottsdale, AZ) so most entertainment, grocery stores, etc are within walking distance or, at the most, a 2 mile cruiser bike ride. There is a bus system that I've yet to use but on inclement days it does run straight up to my office (I'd have to walk a few blocks) and I believe it's around $4. There's a local trolley that shuttles free all through the downtown area as well. The biggest road block I see would be needing a car on short notice or just for partial periods of the day. The closest Zip car is down at the university and that's not exactly super accessible (although one could ride there in probably 35 minutes). Obviously if it were weekend trips or whatever it's easy to rent a car. What does one do about insurance as well, especially if you decide to eventually get another vehicle? Last I checked after a few months without insurance you're carrying an SR22 whenever you do carry again and effectively paying out the rear. Anyway, just thinking semi aloud. Tips, thoughts, suggestions, advice? |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() Maybe me? I get the feeling with the wife that what's mine is hers, and what's hers is hers... |

![]() | ![]() I don't own a car for the reasons you mentioned (living in a major city, with a plethora of transportation options). I had use of a car for a few months, when I first moved to Chicago (Lincoln Park), and found that it was far more of a hassle than a convenience. I'd have to move, and find new parking due to street cleaning, 2" of snow, rush hour, etc. If I ever used it to go somewhere that didn't have a parking lot, I'd have to find meter parking, or park in a permit zone, and risk a ticket. For now, I make use of public transportation or, ideally, I bike to my destination which is usually far quicker and less stressful than driving. |

![]() | ![]() I went 10 years w/o a car in Chicago. Actually bought one because of Triathlon. Aside from planning more time around travel it was nice not dealing w/ a car. Luckily I have a covered/owned spot now but parking can be a huge PIA depending on your neighborhood. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I don't own a car, but I'm one of those urban dwellers so it might be a bit easier for me not to own one. I'm a bike commuter (year round) and my husband is a public transport guy. We did have a car (in the city) up until 2007, maybe? For the most part, living w/o a car is fine. The biggest issue has been during emergencies. A few weeks ago my dog was stung by a bee and she broke out in hives and went into shock. I had to call a bunch of friends/cabs to see if anyone could take us to the doggy ER ASAP. Other things are pretty minor, like grocery/Target shopping is separated into a bunch of little trips, instead of one big trip bc I only buy what I can fit in my backpack and maybe one other bag that i can loop around my handlebars. I don't have any sort of auto insurance. We have an iGo membership (it's like Zipcar), which we use for races or normal vet appts, and our membership covers insurance. We rarely rent a car for a whole weekend, but when we do we just pay whatever the insurance cost is. I've never thought of buying non-owner auto coverage, but your question did give me something to think about. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Yeah it becomes more and more interesting to at least ponder with the emergence of companies like zip car, iGo, relay rides, etc. |

For smaller grocery runs, I prefer the bike, and just throw everything in a backpack. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I have for the past 5 months or so, but before that, the last time I owned a car was in 2007. I live in a city. I mostly ride everywhere or take transit or get rides from people. I live 3km from work, so I just ride to work everyday. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() We have lots of car co-ops here. car2go seems to have the most vehicles and they are pretty much allowed to park anywhere. Downtown and in busy neighbourhoods, street parking is permit only for residents, so it's difficult to drive around downtown and expect to find parking. car2go cars can park in the permit spots. Anyway, probably about 60% of my friends... at least my local ones, don't own cars. Edited by jeng 2013-10-24 3:53 PM |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Can't respond to the no car thing, but I can tell you that you won't have to have SR-22 insurance once you decide to own a car again. SR-22 is only for people who have been caught driving without insurance and been ticketed for it. If you are going to rent cars this will not apply to you as the rental car place should have an option to cover your liability. However, if you were to borrow a car you need to make sure the car has insurance on it before you borrow it. If it doesn't, and you don't have any coverage yourself, you will be susceptible to a ticket and SR-22 requirement and yes SR-22 is expensive. Most companies give a loyalty discount and/or good experience discount. So yes you will pay more if you go a while without insurance and then get it again, but not near as much as SR-22 and depending on how long you intend to go without a car it will most likely save you money over keeping the insurance and not using it.
Only other problem is how in the heck are you gonna cruze for chicks without a whip? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not to break the theme or screw up the thread, but I am nowhere close to being vehicle free and don't see myself ever without one. We own two, one a Yukon Denali XL, so I can haul large thing and a Jeep Cherokee that is the one the wife drives. We also own a touring motorcycle with a small trailer for it to haul camping/clothing for weekend trips. Also own a small trailer to haul large items that won't fit in the Yukon. I also drive a 30 mile commute to work everyday and live in the middle of nowhere Iowa. Back to your thread. I am very impressed with what you are doing without a vehicle.

Being single doesn't hurt with this also
As for cruise for chicks without a whip...not terribly concerned with that. If they don't like it then they can bugger off. Most likely, if I were to give it a go, it would be for half a year as I'll have a restored classic that I could drive when needed. That would work for cruising for chicks when the cruiser bike just doesn't work. |
