When I watched Kona, I was SHOCKED to see several of the top competitors biking in their speedos / bathing suits.  Did they also run in these?

Ok, so these guys and gals felt like tri-suits/tri shorts are unneeded.  But does anyone ride a road bike at this level, or are they all on tri/time trial type bikes?

Yes they run/bike/swim in them ..... it's usually frickin' hot in Kona.

There may be some pros on road bikes with aero bars, but they are few and far between, and usually not at the pointy end of the pro field in a big race.

With that said .... in the days of yor, Dave Scott, Scott Molina and Mark Scott would put up huge bike numbers on road bikes with clip ons ...... just goes to show the engine makes a heck of a lot bigger difference than the equipment.

Yep, back in the days, the ole speedo was the standard race gear for men along with a running singlet (or french cut bottoms and crop top if you're Ken Souza).

Also note that speedo's do have chamois in them.  It's not just a swimming speedo.

If I'm not mistaken, some of those Speedos have a tri pad/chamois in them, like a tri short.

and Kenny Kaboom was da man!

I did not know that. If there is a piece of chamois in there, it must be about the size of postage stamp. I figured they were the same one's used for swimming. hmmm

Yup...they do have chamois pads in them. Here is a women's style bikini Tri bottom with a pad.

Had to look in the 'closeout sale' items, but here's a men's version:

A fine testament to why the padded bannanahammock remains in the bargain bin - it just ain't right!

The ultimate equipment component is your body.  Everything else just adds to better performance.
