Looking for some input here.  Tweaking my nutrtion plan with two weeks to go...Not a good idea but..

Trying to increase calories on the bike. Gonna try cliff shot blocks intermixed with infinit.  Gonna carry them in my tri top jersey back pocekt. This weekend weather gonna be high 60's low 70's....so im not gonna be able to tell how they hold up in heat/humidity.

Anyone have any problems with these blocks (cliff, gu) in the heat/humidity after 6 hrs on the bike?  Do they just turn to mush in the pocket and become difficult to get out?

And where are people storing them on the bike for easy access. Plan to use 1/2 pack at a time but not sure whats gonna happen to the other half once the pack is open.

With only 2 wks to go to IM MOO and only one long ride left, not gonna have a lot of time to trial different methods so looking for any suggestions from people who have incorporated them into their nutrtion plan for long course racing.

JT

I did that exact thing today-- added Gu Chompers to my infinit mix for a little variety on my ride. Granted, I'm already tapering, so it was only a 2:20 ride, but I completely sweated through my jersey and experienced no problems with the chompers.

Don't know if I'm a big fan, but I needed to add something just for variety. I really like my infinit but just get tired of the taste after about 4 hours of it.

I experienced no problems and think I'll go with them as an option to store in my bike jersey on the ride at IMMOO.

I use Shot Bloks as a break from gels on the bike...keep them in bento box and usually pre-tear the packets (assuming no rain...I've heard they'll dissolve in that event).  And, yup, I often eat one half a packet at a time (although in my IM, I ate full packets--twice during the ride, in addition to gels the rest of the time).

In another thread, it was suggested to put them in a ziploc bag to carry on the bike...my wife does that, but I'm just too lazy (so far).

ETA:  I've hoarded a large supply of the old Shot Blok packaging...not sure how I'd handle the new configuration.  (Actually, I probably won't...likely will switch to Honey Stinger chews.)

I tried the Gu chomps for long ride nutrition - turns out they have sorbitol in them, which does not agree with all tummies. OMG the gas pain...

take the out of the packaging and put them in ziplock snack size bags....then you can eat them one at a time and reseal the bag...use a bento box.  I like the cliff shots but its personal preference.   I also use the small size air heads (47 calories each ) and those gel orange slice candies(47-50 calories each) cheep readily available and easy to carry

I used to put partially used packs in a ziploc for the next ride.

I trained with them in Arizona in the summer and they stand up to heat fine.

SD in sub-freezing?  Not so much.  Impossible to chew!

I will admit that I haven't tried the new package on the bike, but I think it's going to be WAY easier to use than the old one.

I stored them in a jersey pocket while riding due to lack of Bento box.  But I think Bento Box would work too.

I used Cliff Blocks and Gu Chomps while training for my HIM in July.  I kept them in my Bento box.  I prefer the Clif blocks because of the packaging (the new kind--you can just slide one out without getting your hands all sticky), but I really didn't have too much trouble with the Gu chomps either.  Used them in hot no problems, used them in rain...got a little sticky, but no problem.

Gu Chomps do not melt or get sticky in the heat.  They are made with tapioca flour and retain their shape and non-stickyness in Georgia in mid-90+ degree temps in my Bento box when my Gu packets were the temperature of lava.  I just put the regular package in my Bento - but it would work Ok in your jersey pocket.  Have not tried this with Cliff Shots but imagine that they are equally stable.

I've done both Clif shot bloks and GU chomps in the Kansas heat/humidity - no problems with either, even with starting with an open package.

The new shot blok packaging is genious. Very easy to use. I even saw someone (a BTer!) at Ironman Kansas 70.3 tape the shot blok package to her bike - where a bento box would normally go. Very well designed for however you choose to use them.

thanks for all the advice.

Used em for a 100 mile ride for first 3 hrs with my infinit/carbopro mix.

Although it was just above 60 degrees, good to know  theyll hold up in the heat.
I agree with the packacking. Just bite of the top and then they can slide or use your teeth to
to get out the amount you need. Put them in the bento box after popping them to get the air
out so they could fold in half nicely. Tried in my bike jersey too incase i want to go without the bento.

Thanks,

Jeremy

Timely topic!  I am adding in the shot blocks myself next week.  I have been using gels and water.  However, taking in a gel every 20 to 30 minutes over 6 to 7 hours just gets disgusting.  I am hoping the variation in texture and taste with help while still getting the calories and electrolytes I need.  I am glad to hear others have had good luck with this.

Hey all - I'm doing IM WI and plan to use Infinit with the Cliff shot blocks as well. Also, I did a long run last week and wanted to bring the shot blocks. Realized I could cut the package in two-block segments (leaving the packaging on, and they fit perfectly in the fuel belt zipper pocket. Whenever I was ready for one, just grabbed a two-block shot.

Jeremy,

I have been doing that same strategy in all my long rides and bricks.  1 bottle of infinit, 1 serving (1/2 bag) of Chomps per hour.   Worked great on my race rehearsal day, and I have had issues with other nutrition.  I blogged my nutrition on 8/22 when I did the rehearsal..if that interests you at all.
