Now I know there are different schools of thought as to what type of swim aids should be used (if any at all), but the guy I swam with today was just overboard.  He walks up and asks if we can share a lane which I of course say yes, then he pulls out his fins and paddles and swims a strait 1000 with both on.  Is there a relevant purpose to this type of training?

Uh. . .to make himself feel cool because swimming with paddles and fins gives him a false sense of speed. Actually, if he swims with them on all the time, it can lead to injuries.

I saw a guy aqua jogging in the pool yesterday in fins and paddles. Yeah, that one is beyond me. He sure was a nice guy though.

I guess if his hobby is SCUBA or snorkling rather than Triathlon, then it would be appropriate for him to swim a straight set using fins at least. I would have expected him to wear a regular dive mask and use a snorkle, but to each his own...

Now if he pulls out the beach ball and floating chaise or water wings...

One or the other, yes. He must misguided that they belong togather. Maybe he like to brag how far he swam without actually doing it.

Fins can take pressure off the shoulders. Never really found a good use for paddles. If you want some more strength go to the gym. Put a pair of regular trunks on to strengthen in pool.

You want to go fast? In High School we had bungee cords basically you tied around your waist and walked the length of the pool.....stretched it real good and then released from the wall and started to swim....you basically got pulled right thrrough the water.....

I guess it taught us to go fast....Weird drill didn't do it very oftern...

Really? That's the best thing ever. I'm as distancey of a distance swimmer as they come, and I loved it. It was great feeling like a sprinter for a few minutes. Going fast is fun!
