Working on planning our Spetember vacation to Rome. We will be there for 3 nights from September 5th - 8th. I have heard that the best place to stay is the area around the Spanish Steps. Found a lot of great looking hotels (from the internet pictures), but the prices are insane. $350 a night to start. Does anyone have any suggestions? We want clean. Private bathroom and air conditioning. Wifi would be a plus but not a deal breaker.
This hotel I found on a UK website saying it was super nice and not expensive. We arrived, expecting to be underwhelmed because it was less expensive and a small family-owned place. We arrived in Rome and after some sight-seeing made our way to the hotel. It was hard to find as the door, an unmarked giant green monster, was literally in an old Roman alley. We walked in and went up the super narrow winding staircase to an awesome little front desk. She told us our room was downstairs and that breakfast was included, we just needed to say what we wanted on the provided sheet, and it'd be delivered. The room wasn't a room -- it was a full-on apartment. It was a bit funny because the bed is in a lofted area but it had a full living room and TV and table and kitchenette and of course a bathroom with a small shower.
Admittedly it was a bit odd but we LOVED it. It wasn't that expensive (like $150-$200/nt ). It was literally steps to Piazza Navona and a short walk to the Vatican and the Pantheon and a little longer walk to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Piazza Venezia was nearby, and we went over there, but were a bit put off by how touristy it was. We even walked to the Colosseum and the Forum from the hotel. If I were you, I would totally stay here. It was very comfortable, not very expensive and the people were super friendly and helpful.
