Working on planning our Spetember vacation to Rome.  We will be there for 3 nights from September 5th - 8th.

I have heard that the best place to stay is the area around the Spanish Steps.  Found a lot of great looking hotels (from the internet pictures), but the prices are insane. $350 a night to start.  Does anyone have any suggestions?  We want clean.  Private bathroom and air conditioning.  Wifi would be a plus but not a deal breaker.

I've stayed at the Hotel Des Artistes near the Termini train station.  Clean and seemed safe.

I took a look earlier this week considering a trip next month. Decided to not take the trip, but saw prices around $140US with a private bath.

You could also try staying at a convent. I haven't done that but have thought about it for the future.  Might not get a private bath though. I'm not sure. Plus there is usually a curfew.

Found this booking site with convent and monastery listing. Don't know how good it is.

I am sure there are a zillion options in Rome, but here's the place I stayed 13 years ago...

Hotel Caravaggio

It was very near the Forum and not far from Coliseum.  It was also nearish the train station that came from the airport, which is how we found it.

A quick check of the prices and it seems reasonable.  The staff was nice, but really that was 13 years ago    It was on a side street, so a bit quieter.

Have fun!

Here is where we stayed in 2009. I don't recall the price, but knowing me it wasn't too expensive. It is close to the Spanish Steps.

Hotel Mozart Via Dei Greci 23/B Rome phone: 06 36001915 fax: 06 36001735

Also, if you are looking for an all day tour guide call: Giacinto (George) Giusti Rome tour (6 hrs) Cell: 349 781 0237

Expensive, but well worth it. ENJOY!!

If I could ever figure out how to post pics I could show you the patio outside our room.

This hotel I found on a UK website saying it was super nice and not expensive. We arrived, expecting to be underwhelmed because it was less expensive and a small family-owned place. We arrived in Rome and after some sight-seeing made our way to the hotel. It was hard to find as the door, an unmarked giant green monster, was literally in an old Roman alley. We walked in and went up the super narrow winding staircase to an awesome little front desk. She told us our room was downstairs and that breakfast was included, we just needed to say what we wanted on the provided sheet, and it'd be delivered. The room wasn't a room -- it was a full-on apartment. It was a bit funny because the bed is in a lofted area but it had a full living room and TV and table and kitchenette and of course a bathroom with a small shower.

Admittedly it was a bit odd but we LOVED it. It wasn't that expensive (like $150-$200/nt). It was literally steps to Piazza Navona and a short walk to the Vatican and the Pantheon and a little longer walk to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain. Piazza Venezia was nearby, and we went over there, but were a bit put off by how touristy it was. We even walked to the Colosseum and the Forum from the hotel. If I were you, I would totally stay here. It was very comfortable, not very expensive and the people were super friendly and helpful.

Based on about a half dozen experiences that have been nothing but positive, I've become a big fan of finding vacation lodging on sites like HomeAway and VRBO. For a stay in the city 2.5 yrs ago, my group of 4 adults found an apartment on SleepinItaly.com that was about 2 blocks from Piazza Navona. I want to say we paid 140 Euro/night for the place that had 2 bedrooms, a living room, bathroom, kitchen, washer & dryer. We had no complaints with the apartment, and we thought the Piazza Navona area was a great home base for exploring Rome.

+1 On the VRBO (or similar). We stayed in a super cute apartment in the Trastevere neighborhood in Rome, and it was far cheaper than any hotel. We had a kitchen, and could make food or have happy hour, watch the people go by out on the cute little street... LOVED it. We were within waliking distance for everything and near transportation, if we didn't want to walk.

Thanks for the VRBO suggestions.  I had not thought of that for Europe.  Right now looking at this

Waiting to hear from the owner!

How many people are in your group?  That's more than the place I recommended, just an FYI, for a double.  As are most of the places mentioned here.  To each his own, certainly, but I just wanted to make sure you realized that.  If price was important.

Check out airbnb.com. From what I've seen on it you can't beat the prices.

Stuff near Trevii always seemed more expensive, at least that's what we found. We paid about 80 euros a night, and felt like we got a better place/neighborhood than we could have found for that price near Trevii.
