Bryan,
Subject: bike tires question
Need advice. I just recently purchased some new tires for my two month old specilized road bike. I have been getting to many flats due to glass being on the road. So I purchased some armadillo tires that are designed more for training and also should withstand more wear and tear. The salesman told me that the tires are a little heavier than the original tires that came with my bike. So would you recommend changing back to my original tires when I do my olympic race in August or just leave the new tires that I just purchased.

Peace of mind that the new tires will more likely withstand more road hazards. My budget does not allow me to buy even more tires but I want to be as fast that I can possibly be. Thanks in advance for your help.

Maybe.

If your budget allows it, I'd put new tires on for your race, as I'd be hesitant to switch back to the old ones if they've seen wear/tear and you don't want to race on the 'dillos.

Bryan,

not for this race but what would be a good recommended race tire. Speed most importantly but also reliable. I just forked out money for tires, tt bars and other stuff this month alone so maybe not for this race but I plan on racing in dallas in september.

I just put on Maxxis Courchevel tires for NYC tri at the recommendation of my LBS. Good rubber, pretty grippy. I think they were $45.99/ea.

If you change from the 'Dillos and have a flat during your race, you're going to kick your own butt from here to next year! Unless you're contesting a podi8m spot the additional rotational weight will not matter much.

We love the Michelin ProRace 2s, around $35 at www.biketiresdirect.com .

The weight difference between your tires is going to be next to nothing and the time that it will cost you in a race would be measured in seconds.  Sure if you were racing up an alp in the TdF the difference would be huge but on an average Olympic distance bike course the extra weight is not going to effect your time significantly if at all.

Now that you have a question posted there, I'll defer to the bear's answer.

I always ride my Cont gatorskins (similar to armadillo) and my buddy always rides his armadillos. It's for both piece of mind and also a less chance of having to change them during training or racing. A couple of minutes here and there because of several hundred mg of weight is not going to change anything for this boper, but one less thing to stress/think about probably will.

Bryan,

I would kick myselft in the butt if I got a flat while doing this race considering that I totally screwed up on my previous race in Lubbock. So once again thank you.

Next time you buy a tire, just get something that has more of the "everything in one package" mindset..

I ride Conti Grand Prix 4000's and they have lower rolling resistance (faster) and conti's version of impenetrable layer..

Its a solid tire, I've enjoyed them from the first ride..    ($65/set)
