GA is ranked 49th in list of bike-friendly states based on a survey by the League of American Bicyclists

ya know.. I have been to many other states, and lived in another one for most of my life. While the poor education system ranking here can be statistically backed up, I don't believe the bike ranking can. I think it's more bike friendly here than many other places, based on observations alone. To say Ga is 49th, is quite a stretch..

BUT..  look on the brightside. Politicians can now point to this survey and say 'hey, we need to do something about this in order to keep attracting young, college educated people to the city' .. then perhaps they will better fund PATH, and get these trails linked up. PATH is the only hope for decent biking around here. Creating the amount of bike lanes needed on the roads will not happen in our lifetimes. At least not during our peak riding years.

Georgia is a big state.   I'm more into the bike lanes within a few miles of my house.

When you dig a little deeper, it isn't all for the reasons you'd expect that puts us on the bottom of the list. It's still not great, but it isnt all based on bike lanes or paths

    Reasons for Ranking: Georgia offers a state-wide bike route network, but offers no routine accommodation or complete streets policy to guarantee the inclusion of facilities for cyclists. Additionally, the state does not offer information on the rights and responsibilities of cyclists in the state driver’s manual.

Yeah but they aren't routes that you would want to ride. Heck most of those roads don't even have a shoulder.

I will add that I am grateful to Roswell for making changes.  They are the only town in GA considered by this org to be a bike friendly city (Bronze level).  I personally am benefitting greatly as a new rider from the changes made on Cox Road.

We also have a stand alone guide to biking in the state. A very comprehensive guide. While it's not in the drivers manual, it is a guide for both cyclists and motorists. Anyway, the information is available, in a very well thought out way.

I think the driver's manual is a pretty good reason for a low ranking.  There should also be something on the driving test too.  Too many drivers really do think that bicycles are supposed to be on the sidewalk.  I wish I had a quarter for everytime somebody told me to get on the sidewalk where I belonged.

Not that we don't all realize the dangers of riding in this town but I was especially reminded of this today.

On my way to work about 7am on Windward Parkway, I saw a cyclist lying on his back on the sidewalk being tended to by another cyclist. It was still dark and by the time I realized what it was, I was by them so I did a U-turn at the next light. However, before I was able to get back to them, a paramedic & fire truck had shown up so I kept going. Not sure what happened. However, I doubt I'd ride Wind. Pkwy in the dark during a morning commute. Reminded me I should carry a cellphone during rides more than I do.

Then I get to work & open AJC.com & see this. http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/metro/dekalb/stories/2008/10/16/cy...
Very sad!

We are brave to ride around this town as much as we all do. Be careful out there folks.
