I was excited to see the miniseries called John Adams on HBO - I like history shows.  Anyway, saved the first 4 shows on DVR so I could watch them when I wanted, and not have to wait a week for the next episode.

Anyway, got half way through the first one last night, and it didn't grab me like I hoped.

Does it get better?  Or should I save my time and stop watching?

I really liked it although it seems to focus way more on the experiences of the man than the history that surrounds him. (Not a lot of montage on the Revolutionary War,  the drafting of the Constitution etc.)

I think the interesting bit is that history has not been kind to him and this story seems to put him in a better light. (At least theatrically it does)

But, I also think that it might not be for everyone. Maybe you just need to watch it some more and see if you like it.

I have watched all episodes so far. I had the same reaction to the first one--it started very slowly, IMO. The subsequent episodes are better, but whole series is still not grabbing me the way I hoped it would, given all the positive reviews I read. I'm going to keep watching it, though.

It's hard to make a long mini series on some guy who just made beer.

I don't get HBO, so I don't know if it gets better.  I did read David McCu;llough's book and liked it (but I am an American History nut).

John Adams wasn't an action hero.  More cereberal.   I've liked the show from the start.   Think it does a good job of portraying what life was like back than.....

The innoculations for pox, travel (very slow), knowing manure, bleeding for releaving sickness....Basically life really sucked then.

Finished episode 1 and 2 now.  I'm WAY for into it.  I got hit with a wave of patriotism during the scenes they were writing the decleration and the vote to proceed with it.  It reminds me that those decisions HAD to be tough, but yet they proceeded and succeeded.  Now look at us!  We have our problems, but still the best country in the world IMO.

I always picture William Daniels as John Adams.  From the movie musical 1776.

Episode 5   Unite or Die

After watching this episode, I have a hankering to run to the library and check out a bunch of books.   Hamilton vs Jefferson,  Where did Aaron Burr come into the picture (didn't he kill Hamilton later?), Washington was so cool headed and Balanced  when so much was being done on the fly,  John Quincy Adams so smart, Chuck Adams a drunk scallywag?

I wish I would have seen this series when I was in HS, might have kept my general interest in History.

I have been listening to the book on my ipod and have been feeling a great sense of patriotism then it gets spoiled by all the election crap and what all the Candide's are preaching and how far we have fallen from the true feeling of a for fathers and this country that I love so much.  I have the first two of the miniseries on dvr when we got free hbo and started to watch but couldn't bring myself to finish the two knowing that I wouldn't be able to see them all until they come out on DVD.  Anyone like to mke me a copy?????  Please????

We just got HBO a month ago and let me say that it was just in time.  The Revolutionary War is one of my favorite periods in history and I was excited to see a movie about John Adams.

I actually like that some of the history is in the background, i.e. the writing of the Constitution (which would be a very exciting mini-series unto itself), the major battles, etc.  We already know so much about these things as it is.  I think moving those events to the background from the foreground is what makes this picture unique instead of disappointing.  The name of the movie is "John Adams" not "The Revolutionary War" afterall.

I got a little teary-eyed when Washington was sworn in.  It just makes me so proud to be an American.  This is the most amazing country in history.
