That jerk should be charged with battery and placed in a Chinese prison while awaiting trial.

Jeez...I just watched the video on NBCOlympics.com - he just hauled off and kicked the referee out of nowhere! Ridiculous, esp. in a sport where respect to the others around you is a key element.

From the article:

Matos was declared the loser for taking too much injury time after hurting his leg during the men's over-80 kg (176 pounds) match. Fighters get one minute, and Matos was disqualified when his time ran out.

"He was too strict," Gonzalez said, referring to the decision to disqualify Matos.

He was too strict?  It seemed like there was a clock running in the background...one minute is one minute.  And there is absolutely nothing acceptable about attacking the ref.  Sets a great example for kids learning martial arts.  It's a very good thing that he was banned, and at first I'd thought "Why the coach too?" And then I saw that the coach agreed with his fighter?? Come on now...that's ridiculous.  He could have at least said "I thought he started the clock too quickly, but Matos was completely wrong to attack the ref." But no.  Wow.

Wow...that's pretty awful.  I can't believe that seemed like a good idea, even at the time.  I guess he probably didn't think about it at all before he did it.

Agreed, I thought the whole idea of Martial Arts was self control.  My roommate in college competed in the 92 olympics in TKD and I could never imagine him doing something like this.

Dang - I get an error - "

Cannot play media. Sorry, this media is not available in your territory."

That's just plain WRONG!  The coach should be flagged, too, with a disclipinary action of sorts.

I believe they both received a lifetime ban from the sport.

The video is on NBCOlympics.com. You should be able to view it there.

Not sure why his coach got a lifetime ban as well.  It seemed like he intervened and prevented his athlete from hurting the ref any more than he already did.  Maybe it was due to his comments after the incident?

I totally agree that the athlete should be banned for life however.
