Subject: Pool Closed for maintenance
Great!  the pool I use is closed for 2 weeks!  The week it opens is a taper week before my tri.  They have a sister pool, but it does not have open swim hours... well between 11 am and 12 pm... but it is in a different town than where I work, and it just will not work out.

I can get to the course where I ll be racing, but the course is only 1/3 mile.  I usually do that as a starter, and then do some sets to try to work on sttroke/ power etc...

What should I do.  I usually swim at least 1500 yards.  I ll swim my race distance in about 11-12 minutes.  But that is in a pool! After the first 1/3 mile (22 lengths) I ll rest for approx 15-30 seconds every 200-300 yards depending on how hard I am swimming.

I guess any swimming is better than no swimming right?  Will I really gain in the next 2 weeks- probably not, just work on not losing what I have now?

You'll be fine.  Use that week it re-opens to get your feel back a little.  If you've been swimming all along it's no big deal.  I'd just work on your cycling and running the next couple weeks and then on your taper week you can swim three times and back off the running and cycling.  Don't stress.

Maybe do an excursion somewhere to another pool or find some OWS a couple of times in those couple of weeks.  The same thing happened to me before my half this Sunday actually and I initially had the same reaction.  The pool closed for a couple weeks when I was four weeks out from the race.  I did a couple of OWS and found another pool and went to it once.

edit: I just looked at your logs.  You swim plenty the past couple months for a 1/3 of a mile swim (granted I slack on swimming).  2 weeks isn't going to do anything.  Stick to the cycling and running and do the 2 or 3 swims the week prior and you are golden.

Relax, you shouldn't lose too much over two weeks, and even if you do, do you have sponsorship or income riding on how fast you are?  Those people who already love and adore you will continue to do so, even if you're 30 seconds slower coming out of the water.  Beyond that, do you really care what strangers think?

Even swimming once a week will help you keep your feel for the water...so if you could even swing ONE trip at the mid point of the two weeks to the "other" pool it would help immensely....

So, chances are you will lose a little bit of feel for the water, but likely not a big impact on your overall race.

You are going to be ok.  You probably would not have gained much over the next few weeks.  You will not loose anything even if you do not swim between now and your race.  May be more of a mental thing.  Work on your bike and run and get the menal side of the race taken care of.

I didn't read in the OP's post that he was trying to impress people.

I would be annoyed if my pool was closed ... I just love to swim !

to the OP: you really will be okay

I hear ya! I have 2 pools that I frequent, and those are both closed- one for 1 week, the other for 2. The third option is only open until 6:30pm, and I can't get to it in time. The 4th option is outside, so if it's raining or too cold, I am SOL. Oh well, good thing I don't like swimming

For your race, you will be fine. Can you do any open water swims?

My pool is closed too. The YMCA's do their maintenance this time of year. I went to a YMCA in another town yesterday and will swim at a community pool Friday. At least it's summer and there are multiple options.

Strange mine is closed now for the same time period.  What is your location?

How bizarre, the local pool here is closed for the next two weeks just prior to last triathlon in this area.  I'm now having to swim in my next door neighbor's pool.  He has an attack Corgi that leaps out into the pool randomly while I'm swimming.  I have to keep an eye out for her.  It's helping to get prepared for a mass start swim.

Im in Dover, NH.

The point I was making was... well really no point, just sort of whining to be honest.  I was a little nervous I would lose a lot of what I had gained all summer long... I have never been much of a swimmer, and I was afraid of the "2 weeks off of running takes 4 weeks t get back" rumor would apply to swimming too.

I ll chillax a little and try to swim the course this weekend.  I only have so many strokes in my arms anyway... Im definatly not worried about losing a scholorship or a sponsorship...

I do not want to pay out on my beer bet though!

What is this?  Pool cleaning week?!  Mine is closed for 2 weeks and another one is too.  Met a guy at the state park beach this week and when I mentioned about the pool being closed, he asked if it was the other pool.  Oh well,  at least I'm getting a lot of OWS practice in this week!

OK, I got lucky on mine.  The expensive pool that is closer to me, is having a 10 days for $10 special now.  The timing was perfect.

You're right, the poster didn't mention anything about impressing people.  My point is:  the people who care about you know your situation and won't change their opinion when you lost a few seconds in the swim because your pool was closed for two weeks.  In the grand plans of LIFE, it won't make a big difference, so don't obsess over it.
