I just got myself a mountain bike since I'm planning to take a break from racing long courses and I'm in love.  We have a ton of trails around and I've been wanting to try it for a while so I figured why not.  I can say with certainty that your over confidence will leave you in pain.  I bit it hard on my first ride trying to keep up with a friend.  I came flying around a corner and was making a v line for a tree and tried my best to not fixate on it but I couldn't get my eyes off of it.  I'm fairly certain my front wheel washed out on me and BAM, down I went.  I must have landed on some sort of root or stick because I have a nasty chunk of flesh missing with a nice puncture wound right in the middle of it.  I finished the ride and then got cleaned up and was strongly advised by my wife to go to the ER so off I went.  The doctor said no stitches since doing so would increase the chances of infection based on the type of wound I had.  Now a day later my whole body hurts and my elbow is killing me but the bike is fine!  Now it's time to start practicing some skills on my own and slowly let my confidence build.

Yes it does!! I picked it up last year after moving to a place surrounded by trails, and now I hate riding on the roads - mountain biking is so much more fun. Now I just wish it would stop snowing here so I could get back out on the trails!

It's my favorite. Every Saturday I'm on our Xterra bike course. Just learned how to hop and jump with my mountain bike at a skate park this week, and tried it out today in the hills. FUN!!!

Just participated in our first nighttime mountain bike race. Never felt so scared and thrilled at the same time, lol!

It was something I was planning on getting back to. I never considered myself a "cyclist", but I MTB'ed for 15 years. Commuted by bike a lot to stay in shape. Friends hated it, but I always told them nothing was stopping them from doing the same.

I became a couch potato, for a few years and finally sold my trusty ride... then could not stand it, and took up tris. I have another MTB, and a roadie now of course, but this year just planned on running and riding for fun. Now that is all on hold and I don't see me hitting the trails anytime soon... maybe not this year. Pretty bummed..... and yes, every since getting off the couch, I really regret selling my #1.

Colorado has some of the best trails in the country, and I have done Moab a few times. The activity is great... but the "crew" is what was special and what I remember. We had a lot of great times on two wheels. Lot of great memories. Treat MTB'ing as a team sport. Practice on your own whenever you want.

... and yes, I have lost a lot of blood, but never a broken bone... and the older I get, the more it hurts.

Was there irony in the title of this thread since you fell?

Having that in the subject was part of the irony.  I'm still sore but really had a blast and just need to calm down until I build some skills.  Long course triathlons are probably out for a while now that I've discovered this.

Or... your biking endurance will be much better.  It is so easy to do a long slow ride on the road... but in the trails you are guaranteed a good workout

X2

Except I fail to see how "seeing the light" is "going to the dark side"!

In my experience, mountain biking rocks = mountain biking stitches and Urgent Care visits, but it's still a lot of fun!

I bought myself a Mountain Bike as a reward for finishing Ironman Louisville.  I have not ridden my road bike since.  Plan to start riding it again but I am having way to much fun right now on the trails.
