Buttercup 14334 | Subject: "Breasts - Not just for selling cars anymore." I love this country.
I heard about this story this weekend. It was reported that the nursing mom was sitting in the back of the plane (next to last row, if I recall correctly) in a window seat with her husband next to her. So, the story snowballs...

While I'm not arguing against this woman's right to feed her child, I don't see why it's so wrong for someone to ask her to cover up some. How does that infringe on her rights? Did Delta maybe go too far? Possibly, but I wasn't there, and I don't know how either side truly reacted. If she got loud or belligerent, there may be other reasons she was removed. |

Edited to correct facts. I wasn't posting that as a red herring, I was posting it to solicit information (which you provided, thank you). I'm not saying she HAD to cover up, just like the airline doesn't HAVE to let her on the plane. However, just because you don't have to do something by law, doesn't mean that you have to be discourteous by not at least listening to others' requests. |

Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: "Breasts - Not just for selling cars anymore." The airline isn't making that argument so.... And, the airline isn't defending the attendant's decision.
You would think that any attendant would be happy to see a happily nursing infant when the flight is 3 hours late instead of some of the screechers I've sat near on a plane. The attendant is a mo-ron. Let Edited by Renee 2006-11-21 1:26 PM |

Scout7 - 2006-11-21 2:12 PM While I'm not arguing against this woman's right to feed her child, I don't see why it's so wrong for someone to ask her to cover up some. How does that infringe on her rights? The point is that the primary function of the breast is feeding young ones. Society has turned them into sexual objects. The law in Vermont allows for breastfeeding to be unhindered precisely to encourage breastfeeding, but if you are going to make women feel like they are doing something unnatural that needs to be covered up, then all the more reason for the law. Buttercup 14334 | Subject: RE: "Breasts - Not just for selling cars anymore." excerpt: Gillette, who lives in Espanola, N.M., said she had taken at least two-dozen flights during which she breast-fed her daughter, River. On Oct. 13, she was flying from Burlington to New York on Freedom Airlines, a Delta commuter affiliate required to follow Delta's policies. When Gillette started breast-feeding as the plane sat at the gate, the female flight attendant, who has not been named by Delta, demanded that Gillette cover up with a blanket. Gillette said that she was in the rear of the plane at a window seat, with her shirt covering most of her breast. "I said I would not put a blanket over my child's head," Gillette said. "The next thing we know, there was a Delta ticket agent standing over us. I was just shocked." Delta provided her family with a hotel room that night and another flight to New York the next day. "Delta called back a few days later and said it does not take responsibility for this," Gillette said. Delta has until Nov. 27 to respond to her complaint to the human rights commission. If the case is not settled, the commission must consider whether to file a civil lawsuit against the airline. "Delta as an airline fully supports mothers' rights to breast-feed babies on the aircraft," airline spokesman Anthony Black said yesterday. "We regret the decision that had the passenger removed from that flight, as it was not in keeping with our high service standards." The company that owns Freedom Airlines, Mesa Air Group Inc., issued a statement saying it supported the right to breast-feed on flights. http://www.boston.com/news/local/vermont/articles/2006/11/21/nursing_mothers_protest_grows/ |

Runner | Subject: RE: "Breasts - Not just for selling cars anymore." Ok, ok, geez..... Like I said, I wasn't trying to prevent the woman from breastfeeding. I also wasn't trying to necessarily condone the actions of the attendant. I was merely pointing out that, as in all conflicts, it's a two-way street. If there is a law that specifically states this woman doesn't need to cover up, or Delta has a policy on it, then good, and I'm ignorant of such things. And I don't know that this necessarily has to do with the sexification of anything. I was merely pointing out that the mother could've at least been open to the idea of accommodating others with her actions in a public setting. Is that wrong? I mean, God forbid we should think about the impact of our actions on others. |

So to speak. If you are referring to masturbating in public, you truly have missed the point. The penis is a sexual organ, as are genitals in general. Breasts are not. Breastfeeding is not a sexual act. "milking yourself" is. Apples and oranges. Peace, Brian |
