Ok, so now I'm addicted to tri's and feel the need to make a purchase.  I have a road bike with cages and didn't invest initially in pedals/shoes because I didn't know if I'd enjoy the 3 disciplines. I'm past that and am wondering what I should upgrade to for more efficiency, clipless pedals or aerobars.

X2... you'll always be in the clipless pedals, but you won't always be in the aero position.

Clipless it is. Now I'll search the forums for opinions on which type....... I'm sure there is no clear winner there.

It really depends on personal preference, I think. I have Looks, I like them. I know people who use them. I know others who use Speedplays. And others still who use the shimano cleats or even other kinds of mtb cleats. A lot of people seem to say Speedplays are more beginner-friendly, but I've only ever used Looks and not had any problems with them.

I vote against the Speedplay light action...Way too much float and no adjustability.

Can't speak for the Speedplay Zero's but I've heard good things.  So far I've road the tried and true SPD, the Speedplay Light Action and am now on the Look KEO....I don't see myself leaving the KEO anytime soon, I love them

There is an active thread here http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=129669&posts=3#M1626630 on Look vs. Speedplay so I'll just jump in over there. That thread references another thread so it appears that this has been discussed ad nauseum. I'll read and head over to the LBS to check some out.

Yup, that's what I have - Look Keo Classics. The cheapest ones of the Keo series (at $100) but they do the job and any issues I've had with them have been due to "user error" (ie, I'm a moron), and not the cleats themselves. I've definitely had more than a few stop-on-a-dime moments and was able to get out of them.

I think I have the cheapest lOOK pedals (pd-206 or something) for around $65.  The only reason I got them is they were cheap.  I really like the Crank Bros Quattro's as the LBS said they were easy to get into but cost more so I did not get them.

I think performancebike.com has some cheap look knock-off pedals.  If not chainlove.com occasionally has a set of Look Keo Carbons for $110 or something.  I bought those and love them, but it's a pain in the waiting for one product to come back up on cl if it ever does.

I'll jump into the clipless group immediately.  I've got the Shimano SPD MTBs on one bike and SPD-SL on the other.  Can't go wrong with clipless pedals!

Personally I like Dillon.  I tried Lee but Dillons just feel better to me Laughing

I am brand new as well. I got a bike off craigslist, and it came with clipless pedals. They were Shimano and I got his shoes as well. I have been using them for about 3 months now and am still waiting for my first fall. Anyday now I am sure. They are very tough to get into sometimes, which I hear is common with most clipless. I would just say that if you are going with clipless, get them with plenty of time before your next race so you have practice practice practice time.
