Pro  4189    Pittsburgh, my heart is in Glasgow |  Subject: I'm officially brokeand people are officially getting nothing for christmas from me. I just sucked it up and bought a trainer. But a damn good trainer at a damn good price. MINOURA HYPERMAG ALU REMOTE for 75 bucks in Nashbar's returned items. It ended up being 92 with the shipping...but that's what Visa is for. And if I get this post office job...then I'll be able to pay for it. |

The Original 7834 Raleigh/Durham | Subject: RE: I'm officially broke I was thinking the same thing too- travel expenses for my 1/2 IM next month (gas, food, hotel) register for Gasparilla Maray, pay for hotel for 1/2 mary in December, need new bike pump (old one doesn't fit my new tires/wheels), need a light for my bike for group rides at night, trainer, hr monitor, winter riding clothes, register for 65 mile bike ride at the end of this month, and the list goes on....it never seems to end...there's always something! |

A couple of years ago, when I was newly laid-off from my big job, I spend exactly $40 on gifts for my entire family. My mother and sister got homemade scarfs and bath oil (lavendar oil suspended in olive oil), and I managed to find a great collection of antique 72s for my dad at The Goodwill for $10. |

I hate the gift exchange. It is an absolute waste of time and money. I normally try and get hints out through my wife that I want gift certificates to my LBS. But either she did not do a very good job at my birthday a few weeks ago or it fell on deaf ears. I got 1 present(not counting my wife's and daughter's) that I found useful. Beyond that, I got a Kohl's gift certificate(practical I guess but it's about like getting underwear), an ugly sweater(btw it's 94 degrees here today), a DVD I might watch if I ever happen to be bed ridden, and a book on natural healings("The Secrets They Don't Want You To Know About"
I still love Father's Day gifts though. Those have actual meaning, for now. |

My mother won't even consider them. So, for people like that, I have a running Wish List with a ton of items covering a range of prices, from $5 to $5000, so folks can find something they can afford, but which can be wrapped. It's been an absolute God-send considering the (lack of) taste my MIL has!! At least my own mother knows not to get me dust-catchers or other useless stuff. Generally, her gifts are of the home-made quilt variety, which are always nice. My FIL (who is no longer married to the MIL) prefers CASH. He's a wonderful man. |

I got an email from Nashbar confirming my order...then I got another one saying that I hadn't ordered it because someone else had got it. I was so disappointed!! I had a really really terrible day for my ego, and the new trainer and my new set of sorority letters were the one good things today...and I didn't get either of them. Crap. |

This would have totaled $100 at the LBS. So after this, I proposed to my wife that we just tell everyone that we will cease to exchange gifts at birthdays and holidays. They keep their money and buy whatever they want. I keep my money and buy whatever I want. No shopping hassles, no return hassles. She didn't go for it. WHY DO PEOPLE INSIST ON THE GIFT EXCHANGE.
I still love Father's Day gifts though. Those have actual meaning, for now. THANK YOU! I couldn't agree more. It is the biggest crock manufactured for greed...not actual meaning! Don't get me wrong, I am no Scrooge, and I love Christmas, but the presents should be for the kids. I get more joy watching my kids with the anticipation of Christmas. The things I truly want are big bucks and I don't have room in my house for any more knick knacks that collect dust or end up at the Good Will. I'd rather just have a nice dinner, open a good bottle of wine, and sit and catch up. My siblings and I are all scattered now, so it would be nice to sit and catch up, talk all night and make each other laugh so hard we cry, like when we were growing up. I truly can't handle the stress of the Hoildays. I dread it. With my dad being sick with cancer, all I want is to be near him...the rest just doesn't matter. |

I go all out for christmas usually. I love spending money on people when I can. Christmas is really a time to get things for people that they wouldn't get for themselves. Pat got me a bike jersey for christmas last year. I got him a new wallet and a tie and expensive shave stuff and I knitted him a scarf. I usually spend a ton on my mom because she helps me out so much during the year too. |

We make lists in my family, so it's easier. What I don't like is getting candy and breads and more breads and more candy from extended family.
