Subject: PA Dept of Revenue - ruining my life
This is a big time rant, so beware... The long and short, filed a state tax return in 2001 which said I got a refund from the state. Oops there was an error on it, so I filed an ammended return which said I owed money to the state. So I paid it. Lo and behold, they cashed my check and still ended up sending me a refund check, which was never cashed and eventually became void, and then was destroyed (here we go...) In 2004 I start getting notices from the revenue department stating that I owe them money, and interest, and my right arm and first child. I call and argue, they tell me its okay, then I get more delinquent notices. I call and argue, they send me paperwork stating that the check wasn't cashed and its all okay. Wash, rinse, repeat. They send me to collections. I clear it up with collections. The state of Pennsylvania then closes the account with the collections department without giving reason. More calling and arguing. I have pages and pages of notes and names and phone numbers of every conversation and every person that I have talked to. Fast forward to today. Another notice comes, that if I don't pay up within 60 days they are going to file to have the money taken out against my next tax return. WTF? Spent 17 minutes and 38 seconds on the phone with someone, who then says "Let me put you on hold," and proceeds to hang up on me. So then I call another department, continue to have people talk down to me, and eventually am told by "Dick" that his supervisor "Ass" (who I had already left a message for) will call me back tomorrow. I have done everything right here (argue that if you'd like) and it won't seem to go away. I refuse to pay this money because that makes me guilty, and I am not guilty. F***in A.

Wanna go to Moe's?  I'll buy.

Really, though....that totally blows. I hate those all-consuming, stress-filled kind of situations. We all do.  Do you have a local TV station that has a consumer advocate person that does stories based on these kinds of frustrating customer service issues? Just a thought..

Call you state Senators office. It's what they're there for. A state office worker isn't necessarily going to give you much respect but they sure have to give it to legislators.

I had problem for months with delays concerning some adoption papers. One call to my state senators office and in 3 days I had the papers. The office also called me back a few weeks later to follow up and make sure everything went ok.

Dude. That sucks. I fought for 2 years with the CO Dept of Revenue because they decided to file a tax return for me for the year I lived out of the country. I started getting notices that even though I had no taxable income and didn't live in the state that year that I owed $400 worth of income tax.

Heres my advice. Invite the state of pennsylvania out to a bar, sit down in a corner booth and order a ton of drinks and tell the state that you want to clear up the misunderstanding and that the drinks are on you. Then go up to the bar and pretend to be paying, but actually tell the bartender that the state is paying for the drinks. The bartender will look over, and the state will nod because they think you are buying them drinks. Then you just take off for Aspen and hope they don't catch up to you in a gas station bathroom down the road.

I got mine fixed by going down to the DOR. Although it took three times and each time they assured me it was fixed. Bring Chuck Norris with you.

First, sorry about the bad experience. That really sucks. It may be just a badly run dept...Hopefully, it will all work out for you! And be easier once you talk with the boss.

Secondly, not all state workers are disrespectful!!! Some (um, like me) really try to help people out, direct them to the right places (or find out the answers and call people back), and overall try to do a good job! So don't hate all of us

You must have gotten assafras by mistake.  Certainly not the same person.  And if for some reason you do owe, pennies it is...

Yea, but since you are so helpful, you're always busy taking care of someone else when WE call. WE get "you-know-who" setting the standard for number of constituent calls "handled" during a day/week.

(Really, not all government workers are bad, but the statistics work out that most callers will get the stereotypical guvm't drone.)

PA is totally backwards..I really loved the tax you pay because you have a job....like I already pay 1/3 of my income in taxes to support those who don't work anyway!!!

You will note the careful use of the word "necessarily" in my post. I always try to avoid bashing entire groups of people.

Except for roadies. They're just snobs.
And circus folk. Carnies. Small hands. Smell of cabbage.

Hit your congressman, too.  Sentators are sometimes overwhelmed with the whole state, congressmen a little more responsive to the local folks.  I've had success both ways.
