Bryan,
Subject: tri suit vs tri short and tri top

Any suggetions or advice in regards of which one is better. For example, which one is better for swimming. I will doing my first tri in two weeks and need your help. I was thinking of buying the BT tri top and go with a different brand of tri shorts. But after doing some research I saw some really good deals on some tri suits so now I have a tough decision to make. Thanks

It really depends on your body structure.

I have a tall torso, and my tri top keeps riding up on me during my run.

I'm thinking about getting a trisuit to prevent that from happening.

Aren't you afraid of a one piece riding up your @ss? I have a 2 piece precisely because of that fear.

I have both.  I like the tri suit becuase it's one piece- my tri top rides up a lot.  The good thing about the trisuit is that it's one piece.  The bad thing about is that it's one piece.  It's harder to peel off to use the restroom during a race- it just takes a little more time.  But what you can do with a trisuit is unzip it and peel it down if you get hot on the run.   You can't really peel off a tri top like that.

It's all personal perference though.  A trisuit will feel really tight at first but you'll get used to it.

Do you have a local tri shop or one nearby that you can try some one and see what you're more comfortable with?  Or, you could always both and return the one you don't want after trying it on.  Just make sure to ask about the return policy.

Maybe it's because I'm short (5'1", because I never had that problem

I've raced both ways (2 piece and trisuit).  I think the benefit of the Trisuit is that it provides great compression on your body throughout the race.  No slowdown on the swim at all.  If you're wearing a wetsuit, it doesn't matter which way you go.

It will cost you some time in T1 to put on a top.  It's kinda personal preferance.  And a Trisuit will only ride up on you if your Trishorts do.  And if that's a problem...I can't help you.  :P

I noticed that when I practiced a swim in my tri shorts & top the other day that there was noticably more drag because of 2 pieces vs. the 1 piece swimsuite I was used to. Not enough to convince me to buy a one-piece tri-suit, but there was definitely some extra drag goin' on.

I'd go to a local shop and tri some stuff one before you commit (plus you can determine your size/brand and find a deal on the internet later if you want).

I'm all about the 1 piece.  You look and feel like a fast torpedo... Or in my case a bit like a sausage ... I reality though they just feel so much better on the body to me.  I like the feeling of everything being tight and a little constricting.

I can say with all certainty that my trisuit is a bit more revealing than the shorts/top combo -- not sure why that is, but it is. That said I like the trisuit a whole bunch more because there's no slowdown in transitions. No slowdown in the pool and it dries quickly on the bike in case you're worried.

I've always had a problem with the suits -- just a little too, well, limp-wristed for me. Not that there's anything wrong with that... Besides, most skinsuits fit me like... Well, they just don't. So I go with the two-piece thing.

Which one is better? Who knows. The pack is pretty split on it.

Actually, it really depends on how much you need to pee.  One pieces are a PITA for that.  I learned the hard way during a HIM last year.  Anything longer than a Sprint and I opt for a 2 piece.

I do the same thing that Stake does. If its longer than a sprint, I go with a 2 piece.

I've got both the Javelin Trisuit and a Desoto TriSuit.  Love them both.  No riding up of the top, no rolling on the waist of the bottoms.  It's great, plus it seems to streamline me a bit better.

You'll love it I'm sure

Olympic and shorter I go tri-suit b/c I don't have to fuss w/ changing in transition (I rarely use a wetsuit for something that length unless it's REALLY cold), and I don't have to pee. However, longer than that I'll go two piece.

Since I have have not done more than Olys I can't comment on 1/2 and full ironman yet, but I prefer the 1 piece option just because it is less hassle in transition. I do have to admit that if it a really hot day, then a 2-piece outfit is appealing.

I saw you ordered a tri suit

That is what I did too and have done  bike/run...swim/bike bricks in my suit and am totally pleased with my choice.  I hope you like yours too!
