Subject: Actual time in the gym vs workout time

Sometimes I have absolutely no idea where time goes.  The last couple weeks, I have been doing some morning workouts at the Y before I go to work.  I'll use today as a prime example, but the other days are similar.

I get to the Y about 5:55.  Gives me 5 minutes to change clothes and put my contacts in to be ready to swim by 6:00-6:05am.  Swim for 30 minutes.  Jump in the shower to rinse my suit and then hang it up to drip dry.  Then I stretch and do a walk/run/walk on the treadmill for 50 minutes.  I shower and leave the Y at about 8:25am.  So I am there for 2 1/2 hours, but only 1 1/2 hours I am working out.  What the heck do I do with the rest of my time?  I don't socialize in the morning (hardly anyone there anyway).  Gosh I'm slow.

So how much extra time do you spend in the gym?

Maybe you're not a morning person or there are lines for the machines you use or you always have to go number two which takes a long long time. If not, I can't think of anything but that your slow or disorganized or something like that.

For me, if I'm only at the gym no more than 15 minutes over my workout time because I took a shower (and maybe use the bathroom), unless there are lines for the treadmill or machine I use.

Sorry, it might just be you on this one.

I'm with you drdi...it usually takes me 5-10 minutes to change into workout clothes and 20-30 to shower/get ready after.  If I'm doing more than one workout, it builds up FAST!  And I don't dilly dally either...it no kidding takes me that long to change/pack/shower/whatever...kinda sucks because it means I have to get up earlier!!!

Yeah, it takes me a lot of extra time too.  Especially, if I swim.  If I go to the Y for a 30 minute swim, I have to block out an hour's worth of time for that workout.

Oh, you know what, my bad...I didn't realize the OP was female. Until jldicarlo posted, I was like...how can this be. Then I looked both of you guys, I mean gals up, and that explains it I think. This might be split along gender lines.

Ok, I am female, but it's not like I'm putting on makeup afterwards and my hair takes like 5 minutes tops.

Maybe I need to do a study.  I do have a lap watch.  I could take my "lap" times in between swim-stretch-run plus before and after to see what the heck is going on.        This could be fun (or incredibly useless and stupid depending on the point-of-view).

Preparation (getting to, showering before, putting the suit on)

Depreparation (stretching, longer shower, changing clothes0
Always take more than we think.

Just do it fast, like if it was T1, say.

Same thing happens to me - I'll go to the Y for a 45 minute swim, and the next thing I know 1h30 has passed, but only 1/2 the time was in the pool! Egads!

When I'm in a hurry I can be as economical in my time as anyone.  No/little hair goes a long way toward that.  But this is why I stopped doing split workouts at the gym unless it's the weekend and I have lots of time (heh - lots of time - cha right!).  You THINK it's only a few minutes lost in between workouts but it really adds up.  Do one workout and stick to it all the way through.  I believe you get more bang for your buck, so to speak, that way.

My typical gym workout consists of a 40-minute swim (OK, it's only 1500 yards, so what?), five minutes to change to gym clothes, 20-minutes on weights, 45 minutes on the elliptical or treadmill, and 10 minutes to shower and dress (shirt and tie). Two hours total, 1:45 working out.

All about time management. Why do you drive to the gym, THEN change clothes? Put on your gym clothes at home. Why shower after teh swim, then again after the treadmill? Rinse out your suit and go.

That's why I work out after work (among other reasons). I can change at work, shower at home, and start dinner in the oven while I'm in the shower. It's all about multitasking!

I'm generally at the gym for about 10 minutes or so longer than the time I spend for my actual training if I'm going home after. If I have to go somewhere besides home when I leave a shower adds a few more minutes to that.

Because if I don't I itch the whole time I'm on the treadmill...

Now, this IS a reason to swim LAST...at least if you run on the treddy all you have to do before getting in the pool is rinse off.

I actually make pretty good time at the gym.. when the non-stop talker isn't talking to me that is. I am usually there for approx 3hrs!! First hour I do free weights, 2nd hour I do spinning, nd 3rd hour I finish up on weights and sit-ups, etc.... but that's only on Saturday and Sunday... on Tuesday and Thursday I am usually there for max 2hrs.

Hey Di!

I actually had the same issue trying to ride my bike this morning.  HA!  The pump was upstairs, I left my HR monitor in the bedroom, couldn't find my socks, then it took like 5 minutes for my Garmin to find a satelite.  Sheesh.

Lesson: plan and organize.  It's the first time I rode in a while so I was a mess, but will now have my stuff together.  Plus I'll run outside, turn the garmin on and set it on my fence to find a signal while I pump my tires and put my shoes on.

Fun stuff!

I find it harder to swim after running then vice versa.
Also their may be benifiets training in order swim first.......
I dont know why maybe muscle memory?

Well I don't exactly "shower" in between.  It's just that I physically have to walk through the shower area to get from the pool to the locker room.  So I hop in the shower to take my suit off and rinse it off there.

I paid a little bit of attention yesterday.  It takes me about 8-10 minutes between each "transition" by the time I walk into the locker room, unlock the locker, dry off, put on clothes, put things back in the locker and organize for the next transition.  Yesterday it took me 15 minutes to shower and be ready to go out the door.  I didn't have to go to work yesterday so it probably takes a little longer getting presentable for work.
