Regular![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Google has implemented a feature wherein you can type someone's telephone number into the search bar and hit enter and then you will be given a map to their house. Before forwarding this, I tested it by typing my telephone number in google.com search bar. My phone number came up, and when I clicked on the MapQuest link, it actually mapped out where I live. I have now blocked that information. Quite scary. Please look up your own number. Read below for details. Think about it--if a child, single person, ANYONE gives out his/her phone number, someone can actually now look it up to find out where he/she lives. To test whether your phone number is mapped, go to: http://www.google.com/ Type your phone number in the search bar with or without dashes (i.e. 555-555-1212 or 5555551212) and hit enter. If you want to BLOCK Google from divulging your private information, simply click on the telephone icon next to your phone number and wait to fill out the form. I removed my name, but it takes 48-hours. If you are unlisted in the phone book, you might not be in there, but it is a good idea just to check. |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LOL! The address they have for mine is across the city. Sweet. No stalkers for me. I totally agree. That is very scary. I will be forwarding this to friends. Thanks! |

Resident Matriarch ![]() | ![]() this has been there for quite a while now. My husband makes service calls and uses this feature all the time to find the right house. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() LOL....ellen that really depends on WHICH house is the RIGHT house.....what telephone number do you give him to find his way home?? Oh...and I guess this google feature makes the case for using your cell phone as your primary phone and ditching the house phone. Or , having all numbers unlisted. |

Elite Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() That information has been there for several years now. And blocking it from google hardly makes you inaccessible. Yahoo's people search uses phone books as its database. If you're in the phone book, you're pretty much accessible through the internet. Andrea |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() It didn't work for me; I guess it is only for US residents. I did hit the "Canadian Site" button and got my step-son's university site?!? |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Diddo. That information has always been accessible. Give me 10 minutes and I'll tell you where your house is, how much you paid for it, when you bought and how many rooms you have. Give me another 10 minutes and I'll tell you how much you donate to charity, which charity and how many of your neighbors donate to the same charity as well. You can find out a lot of information with just a phone number and a zip code. (P.S., I"m not a stalker I used to be a police reporter and that's how they find criminals on publicly accessible information channels. And for all you men who want to date me, it will only take me three minutes to run a credit check and a criminal history check. As a single woman I find this information helpful! |

Master![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Wierd. If I type mine without the dashes, nothing comes up. With the dashes and it links to someones pay-phone directory in my town. Nothing about my address though. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Like someone said, they work offf of the local phone listing. Best way to eliminate this is to get your number unlisted, but remember...it will still be in there until they revise the phone book for the year. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() you're right...it works off of how your phone is listed thru your phone company..... our here in california, when you sign up for a phone line they ask you how you want your name to be lisetd in the phone book...I always say...no address, first initial and last name only with my number...(you can choose to not have it listed at all)......which is where these sites are pulling that data from... you should be able to call up and change that.... |

Elite ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() reverse telephone lookups have been out there a long time. I used it to identify a telephone stalker to the police about 5 years ago. I am listed just by my first initial and last name and the city and zip code (which they have wrong by 1 digit). |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() You think that is scary.... I have spent some time dealing with personal security. Criminal Background? Divorce Records? Driving Records? Licence been suspended? Convicted of a DWI? This and much more are available either free or at low cost. Are you a teacher, pilot or otherwise professionally licenced? These records are likely available on the internet for free. What is your political affiliation? Have you posted any information on a bulliten board, such as this one, that may make you a target of or be used against you in a lawsuit? These can be easily searched. Most of us have info posted on the net about our race results. These are an easy google name search Would you give your name, address and home phone number to anyone that asks? Look at your checkbook. Here is a wonderful scenario? You know that creepy dude that works at the convenience store you frequent? You feel a bit uncomfortable whenever he looks at you. You give him a check or credit card to pay for your purchase. What does he now have access to? He now has your name, address, phone number, age, map to your house, he knows what you do for a living, where you work, about how much you make. He knows how many people live in your house. He has demographic info on your neighborhood. He knows you interests and hobbies. He knows that you are a triathlete and can assume that you will be at the next local tri where he can take photos. He knows if you are married or single. A quick check at the DMV and he knows what cars you drive and your licence numbers. Still not frightened? Want to know more? Check this website: http://www.glr.com/stalk.html By the way... There are practical uses of this information for us normal people. Did you check out the person that you bought the bike from on e-bay before you sent the check? How about the guy that you have invited into your house to install carpet or repair an appliance? How would you like to be the fellow that wants to date my daughter? |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I tried this and it came up to someone on my street. Not an exact match but too close for my comfort. I made sure my family knows about this. Some serious wackos out there. Ovetta, as for the police reporter thing....I've been known to run a check or 2 on potential 'dates' just to see what I could be getting in to.
