...A tip o the cap!  As someone who just finished their first HIM (in a blistering 6 hours and 55 minutes (52minutes/3hours30minutes/2hours14minutes)) i can honestly say that my body wouldn't hold up for a full IM let alone all of the training to even get near attaining such a feat!

I'm not looking for a hey buddy you could do it talk, this is straight respect to anyone who has accomplished or who will tackle that beast!  As athletes we have to "Know Thyselves" and what we are capable of and what we can handle.  70.6 was about my brink and 2 days later I'm hard pressed to even think about stretching at this point!

Just wanted to throw out my appreciation for all of those who grind 140!  You all seriously rock its quite an amazing thing to do!

Thanks a lot.  Congratulations on your 70.3 accomplishment.  For what it is worth I completed my first 70.3 1 year and 3 weeks before my first IM.  It took me 6:35 and I could barely walk for 5 days after the event.

I agree it is amazing.  Just remember YOU just finished what you set a goal for and TRAINED for.   Longer training swim, bike and runs are the only difference.  I swear the race was just one piece of the puzzle come race day you just knock it out.  I couldn't walk without wincing (ms?) for four days.

Someday you may or may not decide to torture yourself a little more.  It doesn't make you any more or less an accomplished triathlete.

Congrats on your race.

I have to say after finishing my first 70.3 I wondered how the heck could I do an IM yet I had already signed up for IMLP.

After finishing my IM I made the observation that my race day my IM felt much easier than my HIM.

Why? I think I was better trained and tapered for my IM.

Congrats on your 70.3!

To the OP..  Congrats!!  Good job!

I feel the same way you do.  I got done with all my HIM's wondering how I could do TWICE that distance.  But foolishly, I signed up for an IM anyway!

I STILL have doubts when I finish a long bike or run, and I'm SO tired and sore, how I'm going to do it...

But that's what makes it a worthwile endeavor, no?

Again, good job!

Congrats, but I think that you would be surprised!  I am more "GASED" after the 1/2's than the full Ironman.... I think it is a matter of pacing, mentality, training, etc.... You probably at one point thought a SPRINT TRI was out of the question!?! I know that I did....

Day 3 since the HIM and my knees, hammies and ankles are still not speaking to me!

It is by far my biggest athletic accomplishment and i'm proud as can be.  Just thought i'd throw some props towards the hardest of the hardcore!  it's very diserved!

Take care all!

I did my first HIM about 6 weeks before IMKY this year, and I can honestly say that the HIM was harder mentally and physically than the full. It was about 13-15 degrees hotter for the HIM and other than the elites that were there (including Heather Gollnick), almost everyone walked on the run. I didn't walk during the IM run, but walked probably 35% of the HIM run. So, its all relative to the day and the course conditions. But having the huge turnout from sprectators and volunteers offering support really helped keep me going during the IM, and thats not something that was there for the half.

You'll be signing up for an IM distance race soon, don't worry .... that's just how it works!!

Congrats on YOUR accomplishment, that is more than even a lot of triathletes will ever attempt.

Congrats on your 1st 1/2 IM, it's a great accomplishment. Here are a few of my random thoughts after reading your post.

Don't sell yourself short. I had never done any type of endurance event prior to watching my brother finish his 1st Ironman Wisconsin in 2002. I was just blown away and told myself I could never do anything like that. But something he wrote in his first race report really stuck with me.

"Ironman is a life-altering experience, but the life-altering part doesn't happen when you cross the finish line. It happens the day you move past the barrier in your mind that says,
" I can't" "

I have remembered those words over the years as I've progressed from 1/2 marathons to marathons to sprint, oly and 1/2 IMs. This year I tackled the beast and completed IMWI. The amazing thing was I had convinced myself that I could do it.

I do have to concur with others who reported that they felt worse after a HIM than after an IM because that was my experience also, and I have no explanation for it. My son seemed to enjoy asking me after both of my HIMs, " so you wanna do another lap of that now?" I truly felt after my 1/2's that I couldn't do a full IM.

So I know exactly how you feel, but I would encourage you that if in the farthest reaches of your mind you're toying with the idea of an IM, try to " move past that barrier in your mind that says "I can't"

Tip of the cap to YOU! Good job.

FWIW

I felt way better at the end of my 140.6 than my 70.3. Look at your 70.3 as a learning experience. It was for me and helped me finish 140.6.

Never say never. You've gotta 140.6 in ya!!!

As far as leg soreness my body felt much better after my first IM than after my first HIM. I did sleep almost a full day the Tuesday after the IM race though.

Congrats on your race!! I hope you enjoyed it!

I felt exactly the same way after my first HIM last May. I did Gulf Coast, and my friend, who also did Gulf Coast, was training for IMFL. Much the same course, only twice. I looked at her and said, "I can't believe you're going to do that twice."

After my second half about 5 months later, even though it was harder and took me longer than the first one, I started to think, "well, maybe..."

Went down to Panama City Beach to cheer on friends and my coach last November, got in line the next morning. In 2 more weeks, I'll be on this side of crazy, but as tough and challenging as that first HIM, I believe I can do it twice.

That's not to say that you will eventually want to do a full IM. You may not. Doesn't matter. You're a pretty darn impressive athlete and an HIM is nothing to sneeze at.

So, congrats on your first HIM and a job exceptionally well done.

Ditto.

I'll wager you'll be researching and looking to register for '09 IM's by mid-November.  If you're an Ironman-branded kind of guy, hope you like Louisville. LOL!
