Ralph's California Half Ironman - Triathlon1/2 Ironman

World Triathlon Corporation
51F / 11C
Overcast
Total Time = 5h 44m 12s
Overall Rank = 715/1885
Age Group = 45-49
Age Group Rank = 43/128
Pre-race routine:

Went to bed at 9:00PM, and got up at 3:00AM to eat. Oatmeal, bannana, toast, peanut butter,Cytomax, yogurt. Slept like a baby.
Event warmup:

Light stretching only
Swim
  • 36m 10s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 43s / 100 yards
Comments:

Lots of slamming into people. It was incredible the number of people climbing on, aorund, over me, pretty much the whole way. While I felt comfy, my HR was high at 165!
What would you do differently?:

I am concerned that my heart rate was so high, I tried to just relax, and I felt great when I got out of the water. I would position myself differently in the water (outside) so that I am not in the washing machine from the start!
Transition 1
  • 06m 7s
Comments:

I felt like I was a little slow in transition and lost maybe a minute of so.
What would you do differently?:

It was wet out, and I should have had a towel ready to dry me off after the swim. I had a real hard time getting my arm warmers on!
Bike
  • 3h 14m 34s
  • 56 miles
  • 17.27 mile/hr
Comments:

I wanted to be conservative on the bike, so I had something left on the run. I worked releatively hard on the bike, but my finish time shows that this is my #1 limiter in Triathlon. My biking power is not that great, so I have a lot of work to do on the bike.
What would you do differently?:

I could have pushed harder on the bike, but I was a little nervous, as I didn't want to "blow up" on the run.
Transition 2
  • 04m 50s
Comments:

I was better in T2, got a fresh pair of socks on which felt great after being wet all day.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Run
  • 1h 42m 33s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

I obviously can run. This is my strong suit.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing
Post race
Warm down:

Lot's of food baby. Just kept walking and I would not sit down. I ate 3 pieces of pizza, bannana, lots of fluids. Got a post race massage (kind of crappy), but felt ok. When I got home, I soaked in my swimming pool, then took a nice hot tub, and shower. I feel great right now. Way better than I ahve felt after a marathon.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My bike split. At 3:14:34 I am definetly not fast on the bike. This is without a doubt my #1 limiter as a triathlete. My excuse is that I just started biking last fall, so I have VERY limited experience on the road. I also think that I held back on the bike as I was worried that too elevated a pace would thrash me for the run, so I was concervative, this being my first half Ironman. I was pleased to finish 43 out of 128 in my AG though.

Event comments:

Ironman (World Tri-Corp) puts on an excellent and well organized event. The bike course was kinda tough with wind, hills, but, it was a great first half ironman for me. This is my second ever Triathlon, so I was very pleased. This event was fantastic, because my entire family was there, and they were race course volunteers. That definetly made it memorable for me.

Great Race!  One hell of a run split too!  Your bike is pretty good considering the weather and road conditions.  You should be very happy with the results.

that bike course is tough,  you should be pleased with that bike time

And of course,  we ALL know you can run Sir   BQ man!

I've read somewhere before that if you paced yourself properly during the bike,  you'll almost ALWAYS finish the run saying that you could PUSH harder on the bike   I think you paced well...as shown by the number of people you passed

Great time too! Sub 6 is ALWAYS respectable..especially it being only your second tri

AWESOME WORK LARRY!

Great race! You obviously had a solid strategy - and you executed! I really like that comment about how you SHOULD feel like you could've gone faster on the bike. How many examples have you read about going x faster on one leg - getting too worn out - and going 10x slower on the run. You raced it RIGHT! I'm super impressed and hope to do so well in my second TRI.
Hope your feeling good in recovery today!

I was there too. I may have been one of the guys swimming over you. :-) I swam over many people that morning. I don;t normally do that, but after a while you just get frustrated and start powering your way through. Sorry about that. :-) Guess it is just part of the race.

It was a tough, tough day! Wind, rain and cold. That climb at mile 30 was tough but the down hill rocked!

Glad you had a good race. Mine was spectacular!
