Milwaukee, Wisconsin
United States
USA Triathlon
70F / 21C
Sunny
Total Time = 2h 15m 40s
Overall Rank = 574/2677
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank = 29/160
Pre-race routine:

Made it into Milwaukee late Thursday afternnon and went straight to packet pick up. Picked up packets for both races, wandered around the Expo and then went to check into the hotel
Short ride on the course Friday morning then practice swim around Noon on the course.
Event warmup:

Stayed out by the Airport so I had about a 10-15 minute drive to the race venue. Got there about 5:35am and parked in th garage right across the street. Set up transition and returned extra stuff to the car.

Ran about a mile and got in a swim warm up before the wave started.
Swim
  • 26m 18s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 45s / 100 meters
Comments:

Certainly slower than I expected. Lots of contact early then at several other points on the course. About 2/3 of the way through I got kicked in the stomach and took in a big gulp of water. Took a few seconds to get back at it then steady to the finish.
What would you do differently?:

Sighting may have been off some and that may account for part of the problem. Kept it at moderate plus effort but gave up several minutes to the top 10-20 finishers. I've improved over the last year but still gains to be made in the swim
Transition 1
  • 02m 21s
Comments:

Some trouble getting the wetsuit off but otherwise pretty average
Bike
  • 1h 02m 45s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 24.04 mile/hr
Comments:

Goal was to be between 245 and 250 watts. Ended up at 241 so should have probably pushed more. Felt pretty good throughout but had to focus to keep effort level high. Some talk that the course may have been a little short...about 1/2 mile. Not sure as I never thought to check my Garmin. Olympic bike PR for me.
What would you do differently?:

My best leg of the three. Still need to be willing to push harder on the bike. Satisfied since power was close to where I planned
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
What would you do differently?:

Had some trouble getting my feet out of my shoes so that slowed me a bit at the dismount line
Run
  • 42m 58s
  • 6.2 miles
  • 06m 53s  min/mile
Comments:

Plan was to start out around 7 min/mile pace and try to maintain 6:55 or so through most of the race. Felt like there was a little headwind on the way out. All miles under 7 except mile 2 which was 7:03 when I grabbed a water and took a gel. Pushed as hard as I could over the last mile or so and passed 2-3 people in my AG. Good solid effort
What would you do differently?:

Nothing really. Executed my race plan and left everything out there. Olympic run PR so I'm pleased
Post race
Warm down:

Walked around and visited with other racers. Watched some of the younger AGs come into the finish. Once they finally opened transition I packed up and headed to the car......time to rest for the Sunday race

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Need to work on my sighting in the water. Can't compete with the top guys in the AG if I'm giving up several minutes on the swim. I'm not a bad swimmer and usually finish fairly high on the swim in local races but its a different world at AG Nationals where the top guys are exceptional in S/B and Run...no weaknesses. Need to be willing to push a little harder on the bike to see if I can still hold the same pace on the run. Have to take some risks in short course racing

Event comments:

USAT put on a great event. There were a few issues with the swim waves but couldn't be helped. Everything was first class and the race certainly makes you feel like a rock star. Great venue...plan on returning next year.

After doing duathlons for the last couple of years, I decided to go for a triathlon. Starting with an Olympic-distance race perhaps wasn't wise, but it was fun (of a sort).

For most age-group triathletes, getting the most out of there time for quality workouts can be daunting. Think outside the triangle to get a little more.

The start of the race I had the jitters. I was watching the other age groups start as they seeded the swim with over 1000 participants.
