Swim
Comments: This was the most interesting part of the "brother-in-law challenge". Swim felt great to me. At the start, we were able to stand up if you kept close to the dock...my BIL went out several yards and treaded water for a few minutes, using up some energy. :) My time was slightly better than Tejas, so I was happy. Did have to mix in some breaststroke. What would you do differently?: Keep getting stronger so I can freestyle the whole way Transition 1
Comments: T1 was a minute faster than Tejas, but still too slow. I need to work on this. However, I was pleased to see BILs bike on the rack when I came out of the swim. It stayed there for several minutes while I was on the bike course as well. :) What would you do differently?: Keep practicing for speed Bike
Comments: Somehow, my BIL's 24 mph average speed that he had mastered for the past two weeks disappeared today. As it turns out, he averaged just over 15 mph...must have been something mechanical, I'm sure. ;) Overall, the bike was satisfactory, but not great. What would you do differently?: As Bear would say, Ride lots!! Transition 2
Comments: Not a bad T2. Still could use some work, but I'll take it. Was nice to see BIL's bike rack empty when I came in. What would you do differently?: Learn to remove feet from shoes while on the bike. Need to get some yanks laces for my running shoes. Run
Comments: Run was tough, but I finally broke the 12 minute mile for my average. Kudos to the BIL, who beat me on the run by a blazing fast 24 seconds...although according to his emails recently, he was running 10 minute miles the past two weeks, right off of his 24 mph bike rides. What would you do differently?: Run lots, then run some more. HAVE to work on this. Think it is time for Chi Running book! Post race
Warm down: Water, bananas, standing at the finish line for 6 minutes and change to cheer on my BIL as he came across. :) What limited your ability to perform faster: Still need to keep training hard and work at my speed. I'm pleased with my progress so far. Event comments: Had a fun time, and despite an obvious little "friendly rivalry" between myself and my BIL, I was proud to see him finish. Afterwards, he told me he thought he was going to drown during the swim. He was also very stiff and sore. When we got home, he spent 2 minutes on the couch and was snoring. It will be interesting to see how he feels tomorrow. In the end, I think there is one telling statement made by my BIL about 3 hours after the race...when my mom asked him if he was signing up for any more tris, he said "I'm not sure I am going to do any more, but if I do, I have to prepare better." This tells me that after all the non-chalant talk about how this would be a cinch, I'm pretty certain he has a new respect for the sport....and that gives me great satisfaction as I continuie my training for the remaining five races this season.
