Total Time = 1h 46m 19s
Overall Rank = 161/204
Age Group = Clydesdale
Age Group Rank = 9/12
Pre-race routine:

Pace around the house, get gear loaded up, Clif Bar and Gatorade Endurance for Breakfast
Event warmup:

None
Swim
  • 18m 58s
  • 750 meters
  • 02m 32s / 100 meters
Comments:

This was the most interesting part of the "brother-in-law challenge". Swim felt great to me. At the start, we were able to stand up if you kept close to the dock...my BIL went out several yards and treaded water for a few minutes, using up some energy. :)

My time was slightly better than Tejas, so I was happy. Did have to mix in some breaststroke.
What would you do differently?:

Keep getting stronger so I can freestyle the whole way
Transition 1
  • 03m 9s
Comments:

T1 was a minute faster than Tejas, but still too slow. I need to work on this. However, I was pleased to see BILs bike on the rack when I came out of the swim. It stayed there for several minutes while I was on the bike course as well. :)
What would you do differently?:

Keep practicing for speed
Bike
  • 45m 8s
  • 12.4 miles
  • 16.48 mile/hr
Comments:

Somehow, my BIL's 24 mph average speed that he had mastered for the past two weeks disappeared today. As it turns out, he averaged just over 15 mph...must have been something mechanical, I'm sure. ;)

Overall, the bike was satisfactory, but not great.
What would you do differently?:

As Bear would say, Ride lots!!
Transition 2
  • 01m 35s
Comments:

Not a bad T2. Still could use some work, but I'll take it. Was nice to see BIL's bike rack empty when I came in.
What would you do differently?:

Learn to remove feet from shoes while on the bike. Need to get some yanks laces for my running shoes.
Run
  • 37m 30s
  • 3.16 miles
  • 11m 52s  min/mile
Comments:

Run was tough, but I finally broke the 12 minute mile for my average. Kudos to the BIL, who beat me on the run by a blazing fast 24 seconds...although according to his emails recently, he was running 10 minute miles the past two weeks, right off of his 24 mph bike rides.
What would you do differently?:

Run lots, then run some more. HAVE to work on this. Think it is time for Chi Running book!
Post race
Warm down:

Water, bananas, standing at the finish line for 6 minutes and change to cheer on my BIL as he came across. :)

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still need to keep training hard and work at my speed. I'm pleased with my progress so far.

Event comments:

Had a fun time, and despite an obvious little "friendly rivalry" between myself and my BIL, I was proud to see him finish. Afterwards, he told me he thought he was going to drown during the swim. He was also very stiff and sore. When we got home, he spent 2 minutes on the couch and was snoring. It will be interesting to see how he feels tomorrow.

In the end, I think there is one telling statement made by my BIL about 3 hours after the race...when my mom asked him if he was signing up for any more tris, he said "I'm not sure I am going to do any more, but if I do, I have to prepare better." This tells me that after all the non-chalant talk about how this would be a cinch, I'm pretty certain he has a new respect for the sport....and that gives me great satisfaction as I continuie my training for the remaining five races this season.

Since my official race pace according to TriAmerica is 11:52, and my time is 37:30, the only way the math works is if the course was 3.16 miles.

Great race Brandt! It was pretty warm wasn't it? I think we need to request some climate control measures for that run next year!

This race, I am sure, was double sweet... you got a  PR and you sow the BIL who is the man!!!

Great Job...I think I posted to the other version of your race report!

You did great and all your training really paid off...your family must be very proud of you. Nice to see bil bike in the rack at T1 and not at T2. It is nice to have beaten him but better that you did some PR and challenged and beat your previous bests!

You did faster than you think...a 5K is 3.2 miles so it if was long say it was 3.3 miles your speed will be even faster than calculated!

Another thought, make sure you offer your BIL a rematch a couple of days before your next race.

Good job on the race, your training really paid off...

It's amazing how those 24 mph/10 min mile bricks evaporated on race day for the BIL isn't it.  Even if he was posting those kind of times, the swim would have slowed him down...  it's hard to recover from a really bad swim.

Awesome job!  I have to say I was totally entertained by the rivalry leading up to this, you handled yourself very well.  I'm glad your BIL developed his much needed respect for this sport, hopefully he'll prepare himself for the next one.

Great work, keep it up and finish the season strong!

I KNEW IT!  I just absolutely KNEW you were going to do well in this race and kick your weinie-in-law in the buns!  Well, we've probably given him a hard enough time now - I'm sure he's learned quite a lesson.  Kudos to you for being the bigger person, and even having the class to feel proud when he finished.  You're making some great progress in your racing - all your hard work is really paying off!  Way to go.

Impressive kicking of the a$$. I believe your BIL when he says he averaged a 24 mph ride and then a 10 minute mile in a brick. I am betting the ride was around the block and the run was to the corner and back -- at that pace. Too bad a tri is a little longer...

Seriously, nicely done.
