Subject: Just got back from the Galapagos

Spent 11 days of diving, 7 of them at Wolf and Darwin Islands way up north.  Whale sharks, massive schools of hammerheads, schooling galapagos sharsk ,blacktip sharks, whitetip sharks, silky sharks, humpbacks, pilot whales, dolphins, seahorses, batfish, turtles, sea lions.....

Land tours were very cool too, all the animals just sit there as you walk around them.  Sea lions, iguanas, nesting birds, chicks.....

I've been to a few amazing places, but Galapagos is the most amazing I have been to.  If you get the chance... GO

I could say that I hate you, but that would just be jealousy talking Glad to read that you had such a cool trip. It's definitely on our short list of places to go (as is South Africa). Let us know when you have the pictures posted!

You are so lucky.  When I was looking at colleges, one offered a trip to Galapagos as part of the biology program.  I almost chose that school solely because of that, but since I didn't stay in biology, I'm glad I didn't. The trip would've been aweseome tho.  Yup, we need some pics.

I visited the Galapagos about twenty years ago while on assignment to Ecuador.  It's an absolutely amazing place -  the animals are in the wild and yet you can get so close to them -- we saw sharks, flying fish, marine iguguanas, swam with dolphins and seals, walked past nesting blue-footed booby birds and red frigates, saw a colony of penguins, and of course the giant tortoises (kept in captivity as they are endangered).  Each island offers its own treasures.  The scenery was beautiful as well -- clear water, dormant volcanos, and a great view from high ground of a huge crater left by an ancient meteor.  The islands are perhaps most famous for inspiring naturalist Charles Darwin to write "Origin of the Species" in which he observed slight differences in finches and other creatures from one island to the next and postulated that natural selection (i.e. evolution) was at work.

Here it is!! I would LOVE to go there some day. I'm an animal freak. Can't even kill a spider. Usually scoop it up and take it outside.

Ok, Ok, lol.... I was shooting in digital, raw, and having a hell of a time with it now, but here's one i've converted.  Schooling Galapagos sharks, Wolf Island.  I know a lot of people are afraid of sharks, but being in this school was amazing!

Before I saw that picture, my first reaction to your thread was, "I hate you." Afterwards, "You're crazy."

Glad you had a blast. You're a FAR, far braver person than I.

I had to do a biogoegrpahy reseach project/presetntation on those suckers in college.  They are really cool reptiles- did you see them swimming in the water??  That might freak me out a little bit.

These are land iguanas, the ones that swim are marine iguanas.  They believe they came from the same species and adapted separately.  I have some pics of the marines, will put them up soon.....
