The goggle strap-under-or-over thread makes me wonder if people ever have actually lost their goggles

I had my goggles kicked off my head in a particularly crazy swim start.  Luckily the strap got caught on my hand as I turned to retrieve them - looking back at the mass coming toward me let me know there would have been no way to get them if I had to stop and go back.  Putting them back on was nearly impossible, and I never did get them fully on correctly.

Same here, goggles swiped off of my head. They were pulled down around my neck though so I didn't lose them. Goggles coming off was not nearly as bad as being smacked in the head!

I got to my second tri ever and found my goggles were broken.  I did not have a back up pair.  A volunteer loaned me a pair she had, on my way to transitoin I gave them to my family to find the volunteer and return them for me.

In a swim event last summer I was headed out into the glare and being the slowest person there was still headed out while the fasties were heading back, I  smacked heads with someone and my goggles got knocked off, still on my head but off my eyes.  Only took a couple seconds to readjust them and keep going.

I'm a diehard strap under girl, and its a really good thing:

Last year at IMSG 10 minutes into the swim I got smashed in the face. Not only were one of my goggle lens badly cracked but they got pushed to the top of my head. Even with the water in the one lens for the rest of the swim, I at least had the other one. And thats what went through my head for alot of the swim..."Damn glad I put my strap under my cap, cuz if I hadn't, they would have been gone."

Never lost them but had them fog up on me really bad and with the sun couldn't see at all.  Probably would have been better to lose them at that point, it was horrible.

All through my high school and college swim team days, we never wore goggles, it was a non issue.  In fact I don't ever remember knowing about them.

After a 2 hours practice session, riding home on the sports bus, we were all practically blinded by the chlorine burn.

If I lose my goggles, I just keep swimming, no big deal.  I have had them around my neck, and simply tore them off and threw them away.  Just kept swimming.

In a tri, thank God, no.  When I swam competitively in HS and age group, yes, many times. You have to get them really tight to survive a vigorous start off the blocks. I would just keep swimming, goggles on, off, or half on. Would do the same in a tri unless they were just pushed down to my neck or something and I got to a place where I could safely reposition them. Otherwise just do without. The water in most of my races is so opaque anyway it wouldn't make much of a difference in terms of seeing where I'm going. I always take a spare pair to races. I have one pair that's tinted/polarized and one pair that's not, so I choose them based on light/water conditions; could always use the other as a backup. (Actually, I take a spare everything, except for shoes. Even trisuit. You never know when you could have a "wardrobe malfunction" LOL.)

Never lost them but several years ago as I started the swim Muskoka IM70.3  I realized that the rubber seal on the right eye was damaged. A problem since I wear contacts and am pretty blind if they wash out.  I had to do the entire swim with my right eye closed.

Had the strap break less than thirty seconds to start. Tied a quick knot and raced. Got new goggles after the race.

I've done some pool training without goggles to help relax.  I was actually impressed how minimally it impacted my swim without goggles.

...I am up in the Northwest, so visibility in lakes is sometimes very little.  I just close my eyes in the water, and 'whip' my head when I am sighting to clear water out of my eye sockets so I can see.

I've never actually lost them, but I've had them kicked off my face, kicked and fill with water, etc..

If you wear two goggles during a race, you dont have to worry about it.

Problem: SOLVED!

Goggles on first, then swim cap. You have to fight pretty hard to loose them in that situation!

Last year in our local sprint, about 30 seconds after the swim start. Was doing the mad dash into the water, and just as I'm about to jump in and start swimming, my goggles broke. I stood about 50 yards from shore trying to fix them while my wave swam away. Took about 1.5 minutes to fix them, and then off I went. as I rounded the final bouy, they broke again, and I finished the swim w/o any. Not fun. Killed my swim time with all the messing around. Oy.

I did get my goggles kicked off of my face once, but didn't lose them because I swim with two caps.  I put my goggle straps between the two.

I wear two caps because I have long hair.  The first cap is a thin nylon one where I tuck my hair into without getting pulled.  The second cap is your usual neoprene one. You don't have to have long hair to wear two caps, obviously.

During one of my HIM races, I had a goggle strap continue to loosen.  How this happened is beyond me...well, I do know.  It was aggravating as I periodically had to stop to cinch it back up.  Ugh.  That race did not go well.  (laughing)  Everything that could go wrong, did in that race, but I didn't let it stop me.  Crossing the finish line was well deserved on that one.  LOL.

If these guys can swim without goggles, we should be able to, also:

I've never lost my goggles, but I did have to remove them during a 1 mile OWS race. The suction on the goggles were so tight, that they caused a piercing headache about 15 minutes into my swim. I removed the goggles and swam the rest of the race without them. I experienced a momentary salt-water sting but it was really very minor and I had no issues swimming with my eyes open during the race.

Ironman AZ last year. Jumped in the water in cannonball fashion with goggles on my swim cap (not over my eyes) only to realize that my goggles had been lost in the lake. Had to swim the 2.4 miles with no goggles and even though I mostly kept my eyes shut, they burned for the rest of the day.

Along these lines, there was a 9 year old swimmer this past weekend that completed her 200 IM with her goggles around her neck because they slipped off on her dive.  Pretty impressive to watch the composure of a young swimmer with adversity - she never missed a beat.

I never wore goggles as a kid, but I would be in a bad way if I had a goggle malfunction in a triathlon because I would likely loose my contacts.  Not a big deal on the swim, but you wouldn't want to be anywhere near me on the bike.
