Subject: Y'all guys do triathlons....

This morning at the pool I saw a guy in the locker room that I  have seen riding his mountain bike to/from the pool.  Making small talk, I asked him if he had ridden his bike today.  He said no that his bike has a flat and he's not gotten around to fixing it.  He went on to say "Y'all guys do triathlons.  That sound like a lot of fun."

Aside from his mixed colloquialism of "y'all guys", since I swim alone I'm not sure who the  "y'all" is nor do I know how he knows I do triathlons.

No real point to this post....it's just that his words ""Y'all guys do triathlons." keeps ringing in my ears.  Although I don't 'advertise' that I do triathlons, I guess people know me as "that triathlon guy"....which I guess is better than to be known as 'that walking heart attack' or 'that guy that drinks to much'.  :-)

After nearly 10 years of living in FL, we've picked up the  "y'all" from our friends.  "Y'all going to the beach this weekend?", "Y'all want to have a party?", "Hey y'all..."

only a little over 2 years in GA and I try my hardest to block it out when others say it. When my GF does I give her a death stare she has been here about 15 years... I will not ever accept it as part of my vocabulary

I'm in Texas the birthplace of "ya'll" and when the cashier at the grocery store last night asked me if I didn't triathlons (had a race shirt on) he didn't use the world "ya'll" so I'm a bit disappointed...

I often see the contraction for "you all" as "y'all" but I have always written it  "y'all".

All y'all's is a collective, pocessive, plural pronoun contraction and therefor should be "all y'all's".  :-)

Most languages have a 2nd-person plural ("vosotros" in Spanish, "euch" in German, etc etc.) so it makes sense for English to have a different word than "you" to imply a group of people to whom you are speaking directly.

Y'all should be proper.  But alas, it ain't...

I think what the fella at the pool was saying was "You guys, who are in such awesome shape, do triathlons?  Triathlons sound like they can be a lot of fun."

Either that or he means you and the mouse in your pocket...

whenever I hear about the ya'll thing I used to think "ya'll is you all....what else are you supposed to say?"  then I found out that ya'll meant one person in the south.  That is so funny.  It is like you'uns in PA.   ROFL.

Actually, my experience is that "You'ons" is Scranton/Wilkes-Barrian for "Y'all".

My dad is from NW Pennsylvannia, and all my relatives from there use it.

No, it's all over the Pennsyltucky/Alabama portion of PA - basically anything not Philly or Pittsburgh.  Not sure what they do in Pitt, but in Philly, it's "youse". As in "Youse guys goin' t' Geno's? Grab me a Provolone wid an' some cheese fries."

That's funny! When I was about 8 years old, we were visiting relatives in South Carolina (we lived in Seattle). My cousins would say "Y'all", and we would say "you guys". They ended up combining the words and coming up with "Y'all guys"! We just looked at them like they were crazy. I live in Texas now and REFUSE to say "Y'all"!

Just for the record, I use the term "y'all" and typically don't catch myself. Sorry.

And come to think of it, I'd rather be known as the "crazy triathlon guy" over the "fat guy on the locker room bench" guy

But hey, that's just me...

The greatest thing a woman ever said to me in my life was in Austin, TX at Dot's which is a soul food/home cooking restaraunt. (Plenty of y'all there).  You have to get in line at about 11am for lunch on weekdays the place is so good...I'm drooling on my computer now.

Anyways, after a smothering of gravy on top of my roast, mashed potatoes, okra, macarnoi and cheese and everything else she looks at me and says "you want butter on yo gravy baby??" all I could mutter was "yes, maaam I do"

I really thought "y'all" was for a small group (saving my favorite, all y'all, for a larger group).  Strange.  I agree with another poster that I think he meant "guys like you" and not you specifically.

I bet that guy was just DYIN' to bring that up to you and you opened the door asking about his bike.  I think he's lookin' to be encouraged.
