Subject: After the swim

Does anyone have any suggestions for how to get the water out of my ears after the swim?  I have tried Q-Tips, but there is still a little in there, and it is really annoying on the bike...

thanks.

Maybe you could wear ear plugs?

We used to tell the freshmen on the swim team to stand on one foot (same side as water in ear) hop up and down while holding the palm of your hand over the other ear, while at the same time swinging  your towel around.  I swear it works but only if you post pictures of you doing it on you tube.

I actually bring some ear drops and take the few seconds to put them in my ears.  I bought some specific to swimming, but when they run out I just refill it with rubbing alchohol.  Just squeeze a drop or two in each ear and off I go, the alchohol dries out any water that's way down in there, no head shaking needed.  I have a real hard time getting the water out otherwise and don't think I could stay aero AND shake my head!

I use Q-Tip dipped in rubbing alcohol, swab the inside of the ears, works great.

I actually pour a bit of alcohol into my ear using the cap to the bottle. Then just flip your head over and everything runs out. Becareful not to miss your ear and get it in your eye!

It normally dribbles out of my ear as I'm sitting at my desk.

I just use the jump up and down with my head tilted method.  It works every time and it's simple and cheap...no special tools required.

I also use the head banging method (standing on two feet, though, and usually with my hand on someting for balance).  The drops don't seem to make a difference for me.  However, I do find that if I swim regularly I don't get water in there.  It's only after an absense from the pool.  Maybe I just have water in there all the time?...  You can get ear plugs if it's a problem.

Doctor told me to take one of those alcohol (not beer) pads and squeeze it into my ears.  Just do one on each side while pulling down on the flappy thingy.  Also a hairdryer will work.

I take a square of toilet paper and roll it super tight and gently stick it in my ear. Takes practice as the tip is real flimsy and will bend, but when you hit water you can actually hear it as the tp will expand.

Plant both feet and swing your head really quickly to one side.  Repeat on the other side.

Yes, like a dog shaking off when wet.

Oh you bet. I fill my transition bucket with epsom salts, so while I let my feet soak I clean out my ears, comb my hair and I'm off...

Seems to me that water should just run out of your ear if you tilt your head. The exception would be if you had a bunch of wax in there that the water gets blocked behind. I had this happen when I first started swimming again and it was miserable until I bought some earwax cleaning kit from the store that had some process for cleaning, the last step of which was a bulb syringe to flush out the wax. Once I did that my ears were perfect and it hasn't happened again for two years.

I love this site!!! And I love all of the hilarious methods to try...

I tried the "shake like a dog" technique...now i have a headache.
I tried the "jump up and down on one leg" technique.  We won $10,000 on AFV, but I still have water in my ears.
I tried pouring alcohol in my ear...now I'm drunk...

I will continue to try all of these until either 1) I pass out, or get dizzy and fall over, 2) give up and "slosh" for the rest of the race, or 3) dry out.

Thanks for the advice and the comedy...keep it coming!!!

Uh, you forgot the banging yourself in the side of the head!!

Truly, head tilted to side and shaking usually works for me, but takes too long.  Qtip also works for me, but if I tried it in transition I'd surely be calling my friendly neighborhood ENT for an eardrum graft!  I just dealt with it during the race, and attacked the Qtips right after.  I can't tolerate earplugs.

Good luck!!
