![]() | ![]() I crashed pretty badly last week. I was heading down a steep decline toward a lake going about 5-7mph when I hit a bump in the road. the "bump" was in the shape of a V placed to divert water from the lake. When I hit, my front tire turned and it catapulted me over the handlebars and I landed on my chin/chest. I have a broken jaw, a few stitches in my chin and some minor road rash. I am OK! The reason I am writing is to say that my helmet probably saved my life. I have ridden my bike without my helmet down my driveway to "check things out". NEVER again will I ever get on my bike without my helmet even for that short of a ride "to check things out". I was traveling very slowly and if I had not had my helmet on I would NOT be writing this now..I am certain. I was riding with 2 very special BTers that day...flythebluesky and cordova61. They were cool calm and collected despite my insistance that they"CHECK MY BIKE". I am so grateful that they were by my side that day ![]() Lastly I just want to say how thankful I am for all the wonderful BTers who have called, pm, insired me...I am so thankful for this wonderful community. You all have made this rather tough time so much easier. YOU ARE THE BEST!!!!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Get better soon. Heal well. 2x on wearing the helmet. I have a 7 year old daughter and she is always annoyed when I bring up the helmet. Such a basic precaution. And it really does help. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Good call on the helmet. I used to be more lax about wearing one until a coworker let me feel the dent in her skull that resulted from a prior crash (sans helmet). Now I won't ride down the street without one. I like my skull the way it is. H(eal)TFU! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() get better! Helmets are good! I've crashed twice and don't know what kind of injuries and/or scars if I didn't have it on...

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() A broken jaw sounds brutal!! Glad to hear you are okay. I hear ya re: helmet. I had a big fall that cracked mine and left a big chunk missing. I didn't even have a headache after! I'm always stunned when I see people that cycle in high traffic areas without following basic rules of the road and wear earphones but no helmet!!?? Hope you're up and at em soon! |

Extreme Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I hope you recover quickly! You're right regarding the helmet. It will save your life! I woke up in the back of an ambulance this weekend because I was wearing one. My injuries are minor compared to yours. Keep spreading the word! Art |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I had a high-speed (~25mph) crash on June 13, swerving to avoid a car that backed out in front of me, and ended up with a separated shoulder and a lot of road rash. HOWEVER - without a helmet, I hate to think where I would've ended up. Even though I don't keep the strap super-tight, it stayed on, and the only damage to my head were a few scratches and light scrapes where the helmet rubbed a bit on contact, and a few days of minor headaches and a general tightness along that side of my face. The helmet I was wearing was a Rudy Project Kontact (yeah, bad choice for a model name), which is a fairly expensive item. It got dented pretty good, and the hard "foam" liner was cracked. However, it did everything it should've done, and it was a "no-brainer" (sick pun) to go out and buy that model again. HIGHLY recommended! (If you are curious, photos of my helmet and road rash are posted in the Mentor Program Archives, page 157, of the stevebradley's Mentor Group.) I hope your jaw improves soon, and that eating is not a colossal problem for you. I'm now close to 5 weeks into my 6-8 weeks of recovery time for the separated shoulder, so what might sound like a long time of reduced activity for you, for now, WILL pass pretty quickly. I have been able to run and ride since just a day or two after the crash, and have even done two duathlons. Full swimming is still not advisable, but I have started back doing sculling and one-armed swimming. So, whatever you can do to stay active, DO IT and keep working at keeping your thoughts positive and your body functional! Edited by stevebradley 2009-07-15 8:47 AM |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Marianne, i am sooo sad to hear this!!!! You and the rest of the Mass Mafia need to be careful, too many stories like this lately. I am sooo happy you are ok, and i totally agree on the helmet, and the next time i think about a spin around the hood without one, i will think of you. Rest up and get well soon!!! Hope you feel better!! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Hope you heal up quickly and hope the bike is okay as well. Just yesterday evening, I put a new back tire on my bike and took it down the road in our neighborhood w/o a helmet just to test out the feel of the tire. Never again! |

Pro ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I'm so glad you're ok and hope you feel better soon! I can't agree more about the helmet. I've had two bad accidents and ruined two helmets. They do their job. I get so frustrated when I see a cyclist without one so thank you for the reminder, I hope it will inspire everyone to be more careful. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() WOW! That's horrible! I hope you heal quickly! Helmets are needed at all times. Great point! I know when I rode a motorcycle, I was fanatical about wearing one... even if I was driving it around the back of the house. Thank goodness you are alive and have your brain in one piece still! |
