Well, I got up early all fired up to go an a 10 mile bike ride, but it's raining. I know some hard core people would put on rain gear and get out there, but I'm not feeling so hard core. I was thinking about maybe going to the gym and doing 10 miles on the stationary trainer- but the thought of that makes me sad- I like all the training we do because we DON'T have to do it at the gym!!!

What do you do when it rains? Do you go to the gym, wait to see if it clears and go later, or go in the rain? No way am I blowing off today's workout all together!

Thanks!
Allie

I personally love riding in the rain. It's refreshing, cleans the streets of debris, and is the perfect opportunity for me to improve my bike handling skills. Of course you've got to be extra careful if you ride through puddles. I feel that the gym and pool will always be there, but it's not often I get a chance to ride in the rain, so I take it when it comes.

Ya know, they don't cancel races when it rains.  It is best to train in conditions similar to what your races are going to be in.  If it rains, I go out.  Although right now I'm nursing a sprained ankle and am not doing too much of anything until it heals.

My first Tri was really hard because I trained indoors and it was 38 degrees for the race.  Looking back, I should have spent more time outside training.  My times and more important my bodies coping mechanisms would have been much better.

I love training out in the rain.

Next time, try cutting your workout in half and see how it goes.

Allie, I'm with you...not a huge fan of the rain.  But there's rain and there's rain.  I won't start a ride if it's raining, but if it there is a chance for showers (not storms) I'll go ahead and head out.  If it's raining before I start, forget it. Today we are a bit rainy too, or a tthe moment at least good threat of rain.  I had planned a ride for tonight, but will get a run (outdoor if possible) or swim in during lunch just in case the rain has other plans for me.

Ok- sounds unanimous- you guys are pretty hard core! Guess I should buck up and get out there! It's slowing now, anyway, and I haven't heard thunder in an hour or so! I'll get out around 10!

Thanks!

Oh- and good point about races not being cancelled in the rain- that's what made me decide to go!

Also...

Don't wear cotton.  Cotton feels terrible when it's completely wet.

I feel wimpy..I'll run and swim in the rain, but I'm afraid to ride in the rain...scared it's too slick, and my brakes won't work...looks like I have a new fear to work through.

...or be more flexible. I'll swap my training around and do a run instead of a bike ride if it's raining. The main reason I do that is it's a lot easier to wash off my body at the end of the run than it is to clean my bike. I don't mind doing general bike maintenance, but I don't care to aggravate the process by constantly washing road grit out of the chain, gears, other assorted bike bits. It's more of a "time" issue than anything else.

Flexibility is definitely good, except when you have 7 straight days of rain or more.....often I sit around in my swim/bike/run clothes waiting for a break in the rain.  Though it gets more complicated with the kids home from school.

Who has tips for riding in the rain?

I wash my bike after every raining ride including degreasing in relubing the chain.

Too many nice days in FL to train inthe rain.  Quite frankly I don't need another injury either.  Would run in it if I could run.  No way would I bike in it.

I don't mind running in the rain as long as it isn't too cold ~ in Puerto Rico it would be so hot I would PRAY for rain.  I'll bike in the rain as long as the visibility is good...getting hit by a car is NOT one of my goals, so if it's dark and rainy I'll hit the gym.

Lightning, though, and I head for home.

Did my weekly 2-1/2 mile tempo run last night in a light rain. It felt great, especially after the stinking hot weather we've had for the past few weeks.
I won't start a bike ride in the rain, but don't mind if I get wet along the way -living in FL, it's inevitable that you're going to have to race in the rain at some point.

Rode in the rain today. I got to my turn around on my out and back and it started to sprinkle. I spent the next hour trying to outrun the rain. It didn't work, but I finished my ride much quicker that normal.

Well today ended up being my first time getting caught in the rain. Actually rain is an understatement, more like torrential downpours. From my experience and the advice of the ppl I was with here are a few tips.
1. make sure your tires have treads.
2. Don't take corners to quickly or hard
3. Riding in the rain doesn't make it that bad to ride as long as your going straight
4. where glasses (even though i had to take mine off for the lack of wipers on them) but they do help as long as it isn't a downpour.
5. When you get home turn your bike upside down and let it dry that way, then grease up all the parts that need grease.

Hope these tips help
