Timex IM Global Trainer vs Garmin 310XT

The Timex sounds promising, but 305s are going for about $140 lately w/HRM.

310 and TGT = new tech...forget the 305

i think tgt is promising.  but will take a little time to work out the kinks...you can get the 310 at some discount if you hunt for it...

Very pleased with my TGT so far.  The ability to setup via the computer interface instead of the watch UI is fantastic.

Not really interested in the 305....like I said in my OP, I don't train to HR, so the 305 is a waste of money for me (that's why I bought the 205, not a 305, originally).  Don't want to buy the 205/305 model again (too many connectivity issues the whole time I've had it, even after reconditioning), but the 310XT has some improvements that might be worth the extra cost.

Decided on the Garmin 310XT...getting 10% member discount at Roadrunner Sports, so that helps.

Didn't like that the TGT doesn't appear to have alerts by time (which I use all the time on my 205 for nutrition/hydration reminders on long rides and run).  Interval workout functions don't appear to be as adaptable as with the Garmin...that's another feature I use alot.  Also like the ability to have different preset displays for bike and run...Garmin has, TGT appears not to.

I use alerts by time.

There are 5 configurable timers.

I have one set for every 10 minutes and one for every 59 minutes.  I'm actually just starting to play with that function of my TGT. 

I also had to decide on the same exact question! I actually had a Garmin 405CX which I actually loved and worked very well. Only problem was not great for tri and battery life also is questionable for something like a HIM. I ended up ordering the TGT via REI since it looked so damn sexy. Had it for two weeks before returning it, it tracks fine for runs, but was widely inaccurate for bikes. I remember doing a sprint tri and would track my mile far less then what I actually did so my speed was lower then what it was...kind of annoying when you ride/train based on this data.

I ended up going with the 310XT which I love so far. Not as pretty as the TGT, but works well so far and use to all the features from the 410 which I like better like virtual partner.

Based on my experience, the 310XT is the way to go.

First workout with the 310XT today (had an ocean swim, but opted not to get it wet just yet).  Performed great on long, hilly run.  Went to auto pause a bit more, um, aggressively than my 205 would have on two sets of stair climbs up a bluff...was moving throughout both climbs and have it set to pause only at a full stop...guess I wasn't punishing myself on the stairs fast enough for its taste. 

Anyhow, the only thing that gave me grey hairs was getting the pairing set up for the wireless data upload after I charged it last night.  Appeared not to be working and it took a lot of cursing before I discovered the default setting is for "pairing" to be "off."  I have to access the Settings>Data Transfer menu and set that to "on" each time to upload.  Otherwise, works great.

Vibrating lap alerts took a little getting used to, but I like that feature...one problem with my worn-out 205 was that the audible tones were becoming less and less audible.

I also had the problem of forgetting to turn on pairing, but once you did it is seamless and I do like Garmin. I also love the vibrate alert, with my 405, I usually have my music on high so I never heard it, but with the vibrate, it is great that get those alerts for my splits.

Does a 305 HR strap work with the 310XT?

I love my 205, actually, but it has just always been buggy in terms of connectivity...been true since early on.  Started having problems with it freezing up over a year ago, but Garmin serviced it under warranty and it was fine.  But the last month, I've been progressively getting problems with Windows not recognizing the device.  It'll recognize my wife's 205 (which has gotten much less wear and tear than mine) just fine, so the problem is clearly my device.  Done all the suggested self-fixes...finally decided it was time to upgrade.  In terms of functionality, though, always loved my little 205.

I had the Timex for a month, it took a long time to find Sat's and lost HR on a run or bike. Battery life was way below advertised so in the end I sent it back to REI for a refund, they are great for that. Got a 310XT with 20% off plus $50 mail in rebate, so far it seems a better product for me, in my opion.

^^ Mine doesn't have the miles but it has been busy for three years now and I have never had a problem. 

Completely Agree.  The only real problem I had with the 305 I got in 2007 (and did 4 marathons, a variety 30k's, etc) and the battery was starting to be a little less. And, a few weeks ago, the whole front bezel lifted off.  We glued it back on but still works perfectly - just looks a little worse for the wear.

My fiance and I just upgraded to the 310 because we found a great price and we're both impressed with some of the new features like the vibration, hr graphing, longer battery life - and it looks pretty cool.

I am sure the timex is fine but Garmin has a good track record with GPS fitness devices and has great customer service by all accounts.
