Though call. I think Tchaikovsky might have been better at operas, and Monroe at the mandolin,  but to me the tie-break goes to Monroe on the ability to sport a cowboy hat.

What?  No contest Topo Gigio is the cutest mouse ever!  Puppet over bandleader, but they both had good accents!

I got the sarcasm!!!  But, I am not a Rush fan at all, even though you probably think so from my other post in another thread.  I appreciate great musicians in many genres of music.

But, really it should be Vivaldi over Tchaikovsky, I just didn't think enough people would get the Vivaldi reference as well.

And yes, my music list is all over the place.

Start a little after 3:15 of Summer or after 8:00 in Summer from Vivaldi or pretty much any of the Four Seasons as a start or Cotton Eyed Joe.....   :-)

As the proud parent of a bassist studying performance at U of M, I gotta admit the title of this thread made me curious...and smile.  My bassist is a Tchaikovsky Lover!!!  And therefore, so am I.   But I gotta say I dig Vivaldi too...I'm gonna have to google Bill Monroe though.

Oh hell. I really dig bluegrass but appreciate the hell out of martial music and the 1812 overture is played every 4 July on post complete with 50 cannon salute every year using howitzers.

Throw in Monroe when Earl was playing for him and I'd have to go with the hillbillies, though.

Just to save you some time.  Think mandolin and original bluegrass music.  He is what most people think of when it comes to both of those things.  As you can see from my picture, I like the double bass also.  Nowhere close to being the caliber of a bass player that is studying it at college though!!!!

Take out the cannons and ........  OK, both are very great.  I just like Vivaldi.  There are many others I like also, that is why I struggle with these band comparisons.    How about Michael Jackson compared to Michael Jordan?   Music to basketball with same initials?

I used to use the 1812 as part of my psych up music... most of my team mates thought I was weird.

Also, I love the NSO doing the 1812 at the Capitol on the 4th... you've got the fireworks going off over the Washington Monument, the 1812 banging away and they even have actual cannons going off... super effing cool.

Oh I like Vivaldi and Prokofiev and Holst's Mars Bringer of War and Khatchaturian's Saber Dance, Love me some Copeland and some Joe Green and the list goes on.  I also have a thing for John Phillips Sousa.  I am not however a fan of bluegrass but I haven't listened to much so maybe I am missing something.

I am not a great fan of bluegrass, but I have been introduced into bluegrass and some of the musicianship is hard to beat.  One of my best friends is an amazing rock guitar player, but is also a very talented mandolin player and aslo a decent fiddle player.  We put out a CD that is more Americana/Roots than it is bluegrass, but some people called it bluegrass when it came out because of the mandolin and fiddle parts.  I usually have a problem with the twangy voices of bluegrass as that is hard for me to get past.  More of the "newgrass" is better because the vocals are more straight forward and better harmonies.

Classical music beats hillbilly music to me.....no question.

As long as it isn't one of the many Strauss waltzes or polkas cause those are repetitive....I keep waiting for the clown car to come in and 80 clowns to hop out when I hear Strauss.

As you may notice, I am on nightshift and feel the urge to comment on every music related thread.  Love the Cup of Joe forum.  I'll take that high lonesome sound of Bill Monroe anyday.  Of course I come by it honest.  Lots of my kinfolk from Tenn and Ky.  For the record, they prefer "Appalachian American" to "Hillbilly". Wink
