Subject: Funny but important question for the men...

So, my husband just got back from a cold and windy run. Its our first year running through the winter and we have all the clothing figured out except for the mens underwear part.

What do you guys in colder climates wear to protect yourselves? He said it was so cold he felt like stopping and warming them up with his hands- but was afraid he would get arrested

Help would be appreciated.

Sounds like reason number 1001 for moving to a decent climate.

No experience in that area but they do make windproof underwear:

From some of your descriptions, Louisiana doesn't qualify as a decent climate either!

I usually just layer.  Extra briefs, two pairs of running pants, etc.

I remember one Christmas day run distinctly.  I headed out in a bright sun and 20 degree weather.  I thought it was pretty nice and I was amazingly warm.  Until I turned around to head back.  Into stiff breeze.  That was a painful experience.

In a pinch you can stuff a glove in the spot that does the most good and run with your hands in you pockets.

When it's really cold - fashion takes the back seat to function.  I'll wear a thin pair of long underwear under my running pants and then over the running pants wear cut off sweat pants or baggy shorts.  My running jacket can also be pulled down over the important areas.

Way to keep up the running!  This will make you mentally strong for your races next year!

This seems like a question for ASK JIM.

Since it’s not.  How windy was it on the run?  And what was the temp?    I just wear regular underwear under windbreaker pants and commando under the cycling pants (those have a windbreaker front) and am just fine.

I don't have a lot of cold-weather running experience, but my hands don't usually have excess heat to offer.

What is he wearing now?  I've run in 20-30F weather wearing running tights or (lightweight) sweats without too much trouble.  You might check with Morey1 or jszat (the kings of shat-weather running).

Nice, Jim

Okay, we ordered the Helly Hansen's special undies (thanks Bear) and will try out some different layering.

He has been running in polypro long underwear with windproof running pants over. The problem is that if he runs with more than that-he gets too sweaty.

This morning wasn't even as cold as some of his runs...only 19 degrees- but I am sure the wind chill was way colder than that.

I will post this on the crappy weather challenge too...

thanks for the input.

Sounds like you already ordered some stuff, but I'll pass along info on Craft underwear.  The brand is huge in the x-c skiing circles.  I would highly recommend the Craft Wind Short underwear or the Craft lined pant underwear for extreme weather  ( http://www.newmoonski.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Category_Code=CRAFT-UNDERWEAR  )  I wear the shorts almost every day in winter.

You may laugh at Jim's pic above, but there is actually a product called "The Hand" that is essentially a jockstrap with an outer wind-breaking layer and thermal fleece inner layer.  In temps below 20 degrees I wear one almost day for x-c ski training/racing.  I'll see if I can find an ad for it in my x-c ski magazine, but can't find it on GOOGLE.

Windbriefs. Windbriefs. Windbriefs.

Can't say it enough.

Some things should just never be in the remotest danger of frostbite.

Standard nylon running shorts under sweats takes care of it for me.  If anything I'd be putting my hands there to warm my hands.  What was he wearing, chaps?

I do a lot of cold weather running, and frankly, I've found that old-school sweatpants take care of things in temps<20 and windy way better than most running pants/tights I've considered.  Doesn't hurt that they're abot 1/10th the price either.

There is a line somewhere around 20-degrees and another around 10-degrees where you have to ramp up the layers in order to stay comfortable.  On a windy day 20 is like 10.  On a day like that, I'd probably have long underwear and lined wind pants on...that's almost 3 layers.  Sub zero the sweatpants get added to the mix to create another layer.  Sub 30 and it's just normal underwear and my trusty sweatpants.

The thought of you having this picture on your computer somehow disturbs me.
