Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Prolly lose some man card points for this, but sometimes (as a Clyde) I am a little too self conscious about running outside since my pace is slow and I am lumbering, not to mention an occasional stoppage thrown in. I know I am out there, getting it done, (toss in any other cliche'), but sometimes I am very self conscious about running outside and prefer the comfort of the treadmill at the gym. Am I alone??? |

Sensei ![]() | ![]() To each their own. But for me it would be the reverse. The gym is CROWDED with lots of people "people watching". The streets are pretty much empty except for some drivers who are probably spending more time looking at the road than a person running. I don't really care what people think and run anywhere I want. I know I look like a lumbering giant (6'8" - 236), but I only think about how I'm getting faster for my next race, and probably can run farther/faster than 90% of the people that may "judge" me by my appearance. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I get a much better workout in the gym. Unless I am down in S. GA at my lakehouse or up in the mountains I really prefer to run inside on the track or inside on the treadmill. The advent of flat screes and dvds on the treadmills mean that i will work out longer too. I have a nice 1.5 mile loop in my neighborhood but I only run it once a month or so. I don't like having to stop and talk to neighbors and when i go to the gym i can workout out unfettered for 3 hours - run/bike/swim/lift/sauna/shower/etc. - and not be stopped. |

Remember, sometimes the light at the end of the tunnel might be... you. This is so true. A couple months ago I was sitting on the porch after a workout (bike ride, I think) and a neighbor who I had never talked to before was outside. She came up to me and told me that she and her kids notice me running and riding my bike all the time, and that her kids are trying to get her to start working out again and they use me as an example. She thanked me for being an inspiration to her. So yes, people might notice you running past their house, but instead of concerning themselves with your appearance, I think it is more likely that they are wishing they had the motivation and discipline to get outside and work out. |

Veteran ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Also remember that the majority of the people that will see you probably won't be training for a triathlon. Let them think what they want. WE all know who you are, and we're proud of you ![]() |

WE all know who you are, and we're proud of you ![]() X2 Who cares what they think, 99% of them wouldn't even dare to enter a tri let alone actually do it. It's the big guys and girls out there that got me training hard. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I first started training for my first tri, I would only run at dark as I didn't want anyone to see me. I was embarrassed and felt silly/stupid and uncoordinated. I could only run one side of my block without feeling so out of breath. So I totally understand. It will get better. It took awhile but I ran outside in the daylight and now 5 years later I love to run, run on the busy road of my town waving at all my neighbors and friends. My life has changed so much in a good way by tri training. |

![]() | ![]() anyone else have to listen to *those guys* in the rusted-out red pickup trucks shouting *sooeey* at you when they drive by? i stuck earplugs in my ears. then used cassette tapes. then cds. then, thank God, Steve Jobs finally invented the iPod. i don't give a flying fig what anybody thinks about what i look like. i am not on this earth to satisfy somebody's need to make a nasty comment. Therefore, im gonna run when where and how i wanna run. you got a problem, look the other way. have a great day! keep on truckin! kate |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used to feel self-conscious about my body when I exercised until I did my first triathlon. Even though it was just a sprint after that no one could tell me a thing. I didn't matter how big I was I had done something that most people couldn't even dream of. Although I also happen to be a naturalist - I hate clothes - I really don't care what other people think of me when they see me working out. Screw them - I say. I am never going to let what someone else says or does stop me from completing my personal goal. NEVER. Why limit yourself to what others believe? Go with your own faith in who you are. |

Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I so get where you are coming from on this one...and I've had the rednecks in pickup trucks drive by and holler...rrrr It's hard to remember, but by getting out and running, biking etc...you're doing so much more than the other huge percentage of americans still sitting on the couch. And it is hard, there are days where I feel like there aren't enough clothes in the world to cover up that extra weight...but you know what? There are other days, when I think screw them, I'm doing this for ME and not to impress them. I LIVE for those days...the days when I'm so confident in me and what I'm doing, I know I could do pretty much anything I want. Live for the conquer the world days! |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not everyone who owns a pickup truck is evil, you know Now kids in their tokyo drift-style cars like to holler at me much more. I hear you on this one, dude... felt the same way myself cuz I run like an oaf. But as this thread indicates, it's really a problem with our attidude. I really like the "giving up a lot of chances to be someone else's inspiration" comment. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I used to feel that way, but now I realize that anyone who says anything about what you are doing.....can't do it? I've often envisioned having someone give me some lip, and me just inviting them to join in. You don't like me running.....lets see if you can keep up. Im not fast, but I can run a long way. You don't think I can ride well......pull you bike up next to me, lets ride 100 miles.... Just relish in the fact that they CANT do what you are doing! |

Extreme Veteran![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() 1st timer, I to, am a bit on the self-consious side, but for me it's in a swim suit. Being hairy, as well as rotund(but not for long) i always wear a t-shirt. I did go to the pool to start the swimming part of my training, and didn't die from embarassment. I never felt good in a speedo, even when i had the body for one. |

Master ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Update folks: It is 35 degrees today, but gloriously sunny. The kind of sunny that just makes it seem warmer, even if it isn't. Anyway, I RAN OUTSIDE!! At high noon, on one of the busiest roads in the area! And I did it proudly and got over my self-consciousness. Thanks everyone, and I hope I did inspire someone because I sure did see a lot of people eating fast food as they were driving. |

Champion ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() When I was training for my first race which was a marathon I would see kids playing outside. I would see them every hour as I went pass them on my 4 mile loop. I would image them saying things to me like why I am so slow and all sort of other things but you know what? no one said 1 word to me. I had only negative thoughts and turns out no one cared. Only people who said anything were very supportive. Now I just do not care about what others think. I guess as my friend told me once. I have nothing to prove and I done alot better than so many people have in the past. Since I am a super sized clylesdale I am slow but it does not mean I still not able to travel far distances. |

Regular ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() I personally wish I'd been running more outside. This past weekend, I decided to do a mock sprint tri. Swim and bike went great, but when I started that outside run, the first thought in my head was, "You idiot! You should have been training outside!" Regardless, I did have to stop once, but I made the distance, faster than I normally do on a treadmill. Even got passed by a runner. Didn't feel bad about it at all as I thought, "Yea, he's faster than me, but I doubt he just swam 600 meters and rode 11.1 miles." Congrats on your outside run! Let's keep it going. |

Expert ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() | ![]() Not to make myself sound like an A$$, but, I used to poke fun at the "fat people" out "running" or walking. Now that I have matured and actually do Tri's every time I see a large person walking, running, biking or just plain ole exercising I think to myself "Good on you" and on occasion throw a motivational comment. I worry that my comments may be misconstrued though so I tend to hold off on those. |

Member![]() ![]() | ![]() God created each of us with different shapes, sizes and abilities. Just think of all the people who would love the opportunity to get out there and run, bike, or swim but can't becuase of some malformity. Or worse yet someone with great potential wasted becuase they rather drive by and make fun of us instead of getting out there and putting in the time and hard work. Who cares what others think. When it comes down to it I think we are all doing this for ourselves anyway. |
