The downhills!  I know, sounds crazy. I am a good hill climber and have passed many bikers on the up hills... but coming down I get passed.  I am trying to conquer my fear of crashing and letting it all out but so far I still have my hands on the breaks and my legs squeezed against the bar.  My husband tells me my obit will read "She died with her hands on the breaks."  Anyone have any suggestions for helping me overcome my fears other than "JUST DO IT"?

I am the same way, although I am starting to let myself get a little more speed on the downhills. My hands are definitely on the brakes still. As I am flying down every downhill I find myself thinking "I could die if I fell right now" and that is usually when I start feathering the brakes.

I would say just keep on the brakes, over time you should start to feel more comfortable at high speeds, then you'll be cruising downhills at 50 MPH.

I am ! .. especially in aero !  I'll be cruising downhill in aero and then think "oh god I am NO WHERE NEAR MY BRAKES" and come out of aero.

My guess is that the more we ride, the less terrified we'll become

I am fortunate that as a former downhill ski racer and a current coach I'm very comfortable with downhill speed in general.  On my first group ride with guys yesterday I think I shocked them when we hit our first downhill and I was right on their tail.  Whether or not they were holding back because of me I don't think they expected me to be right there when they turned to look for me.  :D  However, I find that 39-40mph on the hoods and about 33 in aero is where I start to get nervous and start feathering my brakes on good pavement.  On bad pavement or in more technical turns I start braking earlier.  Although I had a lot of fun yesterday when we hit quite a turn in a downhill and I was in the middle of the group so I had no choice but to go at it.  Turning at high speed on downhill is exhilarating!

Give yourself time.  Find a hill with little to no traffic and good pavement and practice.  Do hill repeats as you'll get a great workout from the climbing and get to do the downhill over and over.

I am not afraid of the downhills, but I am so new to cycling I wonder if there is a technique to it. Do any of you experienced guys or gals have any tips for riding fast downhill? I often put more pressure on my pedals so my butt really isn't "sitting" on the seat.  It feels a bit more stable, I assume it has to be lowering the center of gravity with my weight down lower instead of up on the seat.  Like I said though, I'm really new to cycling.

Go mountain/xc biking.  Once you get use to flying through the trees often times brushing them or wacking them with your shoulder at 20+mph, a long downhill on a road bike doesn't seem so bad.

I have no fear of speed at all and also raced BMX as a kid.  You get use to going fast and staying calm with your bike when you are flying through the air inches away from someone else.  Plus I ride a sport motorcycle and have taken it above 150mph.

Here is something to consider.  The faster you go the more stable your bicycle is.

I fly down the hills with no brakes,  but I always, always, always clamp my knees around the top bar.  It makes my bike feel more stable and not wobble as much.

Also, you might try lifting your bottom off of your seat and allowing your legs to absorb the road bumps (like shock-absorbers).  It will make you bounce around a lot less so you can feel more in-control.

I have the exact same problem - I pump past the competition on the uphills, with them on the flats, but when the downhills come I am wimping it out with my hands on the brakes the whole way down. I just freak out - and I know it is killing me in the results.

I do know that I REALLY freak out when I feel the 'speed wobble' and I think it just has something to do with my balance and mental wussiness while on the bike. Any suggestions on how to get over this? I know it will make me feel a lot happier with my bike performances?

I have this fear, too, although I'm getting a little more comfortable. I am able to open up and lay off the brakes for the most part if I know there isn't a stop sign up ahead and possible cross traffic. But yesterday I was riding with a group of women on the same route that I will be riding in a tri in September. There are couple of steep descents. The one that scares me doesn't not flatten out at all before a stop sign. No matter how often I feathered the brakes or rode the brakes, there was no way I would have been able to come to a stop at that stop sign had there been a car. It was not a 4-way stop--the cars don't stop. The first time I rode this route a few weeks ago I built up quite a bit of speed, got a little panicky as I realized I would not be able to stop if needed, and probably gave the front brakes a little too much emphasis and felt the back tire coming up. Yesterday, knowing exactly what was up ahead, I was super careful and kept my brakes squeezed are all the way down the hill. I still didn't feel like I would have been able to come to a complete stop. I felt that I was lucky in both instances that there were no cars. The other women just flew right down the hill and right through the stop sign (it was a right turn only situation).  And I very recently had my bike tuned up, so I don't feel it is my brakes. So...I don't get it? How do you fearlessly fly down a hill when there is a very real chance that you might fly into traffic?

^agreed. in mtn biking when ur tucked in turns at speed and the front is shoveling out as u turn and u ride it out is nuts!

I wil say, in road biking, make sure you always have good pressures in your tires if you're out and about to try your luck at high speeds. Yesterday i was riding deflated a bit and i was on a long stretch downhill where i had to right turn near the bottom...my front tire rolled a bit inducin understeer and i locked the rear up and crotch cradled my handlebars to avoid kissing the side of a suburban at the light. I think the driver awas screaming with me...lol

I hit 53mph down a hill last weekend, the fastest I've ever been and it didn't really hit me until after the hill when I slowed down just how fast I was going. I was in aero and just cruising hoping I didn't pop a tire or hit a pot hole.

IMO you just have to go for it and trust that the bike is solid. (which can be a little troubling when I was the person who last changed out the tires)

I have the same natural inclination.  Downhill makes me nervous.  I find that it does get better the more I do it.  Just keep riding and you'll gain comfort in your ability to descend.  You may have to re-learn it each season, but such as it it.

Um, hi. Me. Seriously, I should be the BT mascot of hating downhills, I am so freakin scared of them. I've basically ended up hating cycling because of it. Sadly, I don't have any suggestions for you as all the suggestions everyone else will give you don't work for me (ie, doing downhill repeats - it actually makes me MORE scared). But just so you know, you're not crazy in your fear. There are lots of people who don't like them. And unlike me, most of them can still ride hills. If you can actually do them, that's one step ahead.

I agree with the earlier poster about putting your knees against the top tube.  I also try to focus on staying relaxed, and not gripping the bars too tightly.

I hate country roads both on my bike and in the car. Windy downhills going at a speed where my bike starts shaking makes me pretty freaked out. Maybe it's because I had a near death road crash on country roads or maybe I just don't like the fact that I'm so vulnerable on my bike to falling off.

I get scared when I can't see down the whole hill.  If I can see to the bottom, I am good b/c I can see if something gets in my way.  It is getting better for me though.

I am feeling so much better just reading the posts!  I thought I was the only person on a bike who would prefer to climb a hill than fly down one!  I am going to go out and practice on hills, up and down until I can let loose of the brake.  Last year I was 3 rd overall in my age group, 2nd in the swim, 3rd in the run and 4th in the bike by 2 mins. The second place finisher beat me by 10 seconds! I know it was because of the downhills, I am determined not to let it happen this year.  I appreciate all your comments and suggestions, thanks!

lots of good ideas....squeezing your top tube helps steady the bike.

The fear never goes away, you just become more familiar with it.

Pick a hill, and repeat it.  note your top speed.  try and go 1-2 mph faster next week.  its easier to go from 25-27.  than 27-29, than 29-31, than before you know it, your up to 40.

much easier than going from 25-40....

gradual increase.

someone has a quote on here, "the only way at getting better at climbing hills is, climbing hills."  some ting on down hills.  really only one way to get better at it.

You'll love them in no time.  Just gotta get comfy with the road and bike.

I used to race motorcycles.  50mph will always be slow to me.

msmogreen - 2009-06-21 12:44 PM I How do you fearlessly fly down a hill when there is a very real chance that you might fly into traffic?

That's not fearless, it's just stupid.  If you are going to have to stop, you can't fly down the hill in a high gear.  You must downshift and slow down.

However, just practice on a route YOU KNOW where you know you are safe to go down the hill without stopping or where there will be an uphill to slow you at the bottom.  And, take your bottom off of the seat so you can "bounce" with the bike and clamp your knees around the top tube for stability.

And, if you are type "A" keep track of top speed like the poster above mentioned and try to do 1 mph better every time.

Thanks... that's kind of how I felt watching as the rest of the group did fly fearlessly ahead of me while I rode my brakes. I've been on a couple of rides where the bottom of a steep descent ended in a stop sign and nobody else seemed to think it was a concern.  I didn't know about clamping knees around the top tube. Will definitely try that next time.

Start racing gravity bikes.  Everything else will seem like child's play...
